Laxers Travel To Durham, NC To Take On #8 Duke
Providence, Rhode Island – Coming off a 14-5 win over Vermont, the Brown men's lacrosse team will travel to Durham, North Carolina to battle eighth-ranked Duke on Tuesday, March 27. All the action starts at 3:00 p.m. at Koskinen Stadium.
Brown's Record: The Bears evened their record at 3-3 on the season with a 14-5 victory over Vermont on Saturday. Nick Piroli scored four goals, while sophomore Sam Hurster and junior Johnny DePeters each netted two goals for the Bears.
The Blue Devils: Duke (7-3 overall) is riding a four game winning streak following a 13-11 win over #18 Georgetown. The Blue Devils have also registered wins over Rutgers (16-8), #17 Penn (12-8), Jacksonville (16-7), Harvard (11-8), #11 North Carolina (13-11) and Dartmouth (20-9), with losses to #9 Notre Dame (7-3), #5 Maryland (10-7) and #9 Loyola (13-8).
Piroli Named Ivy League Co-Rookie of the Week: Bears freshman attackman Nick Piroli (Black River, NY) was named the Ivy League co-Rookie of the Week for the second time this season for his outstanding play in Brown's 14-5 victory over Vermont. Piroli scored a career high four goals in the win over the Catamounts. He also added an assist for a career best five points on the day.
The Brown-Duke Series Record: The Bears and Blue Devils have met 13 times before, with Duke holding an 8-5 series advantage over Brown. Duke has won the last three games over the Bears, including a 12-7 win last year at Koskinen Stadium. Brown's last win over Duke came on March 18, 2000, when the Bears grabbed a 10-9 win over the Blue Devils.
Bear Facts: Bears' sophomore goalie Will Round made eight saves against Vermont and ranks 18th nationally in goals against average (8.78)…Sophomore defenseman Phil Pierce ranks second nationally with 2.7 caused turnovers per game… Freshman Nick Piroli is Brown's leading goal scorer with 12 goals on the season. His 12 goals have come on 23 shots, for a shooting percentage of .522seventh best in the nation. With four assists, he ranks second on the Brown squad in overall points with 16 points…Junior defenseman Sam Ford leads the Brown squad with 26 ground balls…Brown's man-down defense ranks eighth nationally, allowing five goals in 23 opponent attempts… Senior attackman Parker Brown is Brown's top scorer with 18 points (9 goals, 9 assists). He has registered 88 career points, with 49 career goals and 39 career assists…Sophomore face-off specialist Tommy Capone was named to the Ivy League honor roll after winning 11 of 18 face-offs vs. Vermont, while picking up eight ground balls…Sophomore Sam Hurster's 10 goals ranks second on the Brown team.
The Captains: Seniors Parker Brown and Rob Schlesinger are co-captains of the 2012 Brown lacrosse team. Parker Brown was the Bears' leading scorer in 2011 with 40 points (22 goals, 18 assists), while Schlesinger was an All-Ivy and All-New England selection.
Next Game: The Bears return home on Saturday, March 31, hosting Ivy League rival Princeton at Stevenson Field, starting at 3:00 p.m. Brown is playing on the Stevenson Field grass for the first time this season.
