Brown Hosts #6 UMass In Key New England Rivalry Game
Providence, Rhode Island - New England's longest running lacrosse rivalry will be renewed for the 51st time when Brown hosts #6 UMass on Saturday, March 3 at Meister-Kavan Field. Both teams are coming off wins, the Bears (1-0) over Quinnipiac, and the Minutemen (3-0) over Ohio State. Face-off is at 1:00 p.m.
Brown's Record: The Bears are coming off a 12-7 win over Quinnipiac in Hamden, Connecticut, behind the play of freshman Nick Piroli, who scored three goals, and senior Dan O'Brien, who registered five points (2 goals, 3 assists).
The Minutemen: UMass has already played three games, posting wins over Army (12-11), #12 Bucknell (11-9) and #11 Ohio State (9-3).
The Series Record: Brown and UMass will be meeting for the 51th time, with the Bears holding a 26-23-1 series advantage. The Minutemen have won the last two games, including a 9-6 decision last year in Amherst. Brown earned a 9-8 decision in 2009 at Garbor Field.
Round In The Goal: Bears' sophomore Will Round was outstanding in a starting role against Quinnipiac, making 10 first half saves against the Bobcats, and finishing with 12 saves.
Piroli Named Ivy League Rookie of the Week: Brown freshman attackman Nick Piroli made a big splash in his collegiate debut, scoring three goals in a 12-7 win over Quinnipiac to be named the Ivy league co-Rookie of the Week. Piroli is the first Brown freshman to start on attack since Andrew Feinberg in 2008.
Facing Off: Sophomore Tommy Capone took over the face-off duties for the Bears and settled down after a rough start. Capone lost six of five face-offs in the opening quarter against Quinnipiac, but came back to capture 12 of the next 16 face-offs to finish the game 13 of 21.

Bear Facts: Seniors Parker Brown and Rob Schlesinger are co-captains of the 2012 Brown lacrosse team. Parker Brown, who had a goal and two assists vs. Quinnipiac, was the Bears' leading scorer in 2011 with 40 points (22 goals, 18 assists), while Schlesinger was an All-Ivy and All-New England selection...Sophomore attackman Sam Hurster netted two goals against Quinnipiac...Junior defenseman Sam Ford picked up a game high six ground balls vs. Quinnipiac.
