Brown Cruises To 14-7 Win Over Providence To Claim Ocean State Cup

Providence, RI –Junior Andrew Feinberg scored a career high five goals and junior David Hawley added three goals to lead Brown to a 14-7 non-league victory over Providence and claim the first Ocean State Cup.  Brown extends its record to 6-5 with the win, while the Friars drop to 0-11.

 

The Ocean State Cup is awarded by the Rhode Island Lacrosse Association to winner of the season series between Rhode Island's three Division I teams – Brown, Bryant and Providence.  Brown captured the Cup with wins over the Bulldogs and Friars.

 

Hawley opened the scoring for the Bears, but Providence goalie Christian Dzwilewski stunned the Bears with a goal from beyond the midfield stripe to tie the game, 1-1.

 

That was the wake-up call Brown needed as the Bears scored six of the next seven goals to grab a 7-2 lead at the half.  Hawley and Feinberg scored two goals in the spurt, while senior All-American Thomas Muldoon and freshman Alex Jones also scored, with Jones netting his first career goal.

 

The Friars' Chris Mahoney scored to open the second half with a quick goal to cut Brown's lead to 7-3.  Brown put the game away with three straight goals by Feinberg and another by sophomore Rob Schlesinger to grab its biggest lead, 11-3, with 7:08 left in the third quarter.

 

Brown senior Collins Carey had two goals and two assists, while senior Reade Seligmann added a goal and two assists. Junior Matt Chris was solid in goal for the Bears, making nine saves.

 

The Friars were led by Mahoney, who scored two goals.

 

Brown travels to Ithaca, New York on Saturday, April 24 to face Cornell in a key Ivy League game.  Game time is 1:00 p.m. at Schoellkopf Field.
