PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown men's ice hockey team, under the direction of seventh-year Head Coach Roger Grillo, got off to its best start since the 1975-76 season with a 6-1-1 record during the month of November.
The Bears opened the 2003-2004 campaign with a 2-0 shutout over Harvard, the second straight year they have opened the season with a shutout victory over the Crimson. After dropping a 3-1 decision at Dartmouth, Brown rebounded the next night with a 3-1 win over Vemont, and the Bears then went 4-0-1 for an unbeatedn streak of six games (5-0-1). Grillo guided the team to two ECAC weekend sweeps with wins over Yale (6-0) and Princeton (5-1) in mid-November, and wins over Clarkson (4-1) and St. Lawrence (8-0), the Bears' largest margin of victory since a 10-1 win over Air Force in 1994.
Grillo's players have received both conference and national recognition with senior Hobey Baker candidate Yann Danis earning ECAC Goalie of the Week (11/3), ECAC Player of the Week (12/1), USCHO Defensive Player of the Week (11/4 & 12/2), INCH.Com Player of the Week (11/17), and freshman Brian Ihnacak earning ECAC Rookie of the Week honors (11/17 & 12/1). Danis was also recognized as the HCA November Player of the Month, while Ihnacak was an Honorable Mention selection for the HCA November Rookie of the Month. Currently, the Bears rank in the top-five in the country in several categories, including team defense (1st), power-play (2nd), and penalty-kill (2nd).
The Bears are off for two weeks for exams and the holidays, but return to action on December 27th, when they take on Wayne State in opening round action of North Dakota's Subway Holiday Classic.
