Burke Named Brown Men's Ice Hockey Assistant Captain
Oct. 8, 2004
PROVIDENCE, RI - Brown University senior Gerry Burke (Milton, MA) of the men's ice hockey team, has been named an Assistant Captain for 2004-2005, as announced by eighth-year head coach Roger Grillo. Burke will join senior Captain Les Haggett (Norwood, NY) in leading the Bears this season, as they look for their second trip to the ECAC Championship in the last three years.
Burke enters the season as Brown's top defenseman and Grillo will count on him to lead a relatively young defensive corps. Burke has missed just two games during his three-year career and contributes in all areas, including the power-play and penalty kill. In three seasons, Burke has racked up 12 points (2g, 10a), including eight points in 2002-2003, and 107 penalty minutes. As a freshman, Burke led the team with a "+10" rating, finishing with a "+1" rating as a sophomore, and a "+3" rating last season. In addition to his success on the ice, Burke has also been named to the ECAC All-Academic Squad in each of the past two seasons.
Prior to enrolling at Brown, Burke played hockey at Boston College High (1996-2000) and at Phillips Exeter (2000-2001). A 2000 selection to the Boston Herald Dream Team, Burke was named Hockey Night in Boston Catholic/Public Defensive Co-MVP during the same year. The following year, while playing for Exeter, Burke was named Hockey Night in Boston Prep/Private Defensive MVP.
The 2004-2005 men's ice hockey season kicks off on Friday, October 29, when the Bears host Harvard, college hockey's oldest active rivalry, in the season-opener for both squads. The puck drops at 7:00 p.m. at Meehan Auditorium.
