Men's Ice Hockey Picked Fourth In Preseason ECAC Coaches' Poll; Fifth in the Media Poll

Sept. 25, 2002

ALBANY, NY - The Brown men's ice hockey team is picked fourth in the annual preseason ECAC Coaches' poll and fifth in the preseason media poll, announced yesterday at the ECAC media day, held at Pepsi Arena, the host of the 2003 ECAC men's ice hockey championship in March. In addition, Brown junior goaltender Yann Danis (Saint-Jerome, QUE) was named to the preseason All-Conference squad.

The Bears, who were picked to finish last a year ago, received their highest ranking ever in the coaches' poll with the fourth place selection. Brown was picked to finish in fifth place in both 1993-1994 and 1991-1992. Last year, Brown ended the season in a three-way tie for sixth place and made its first ECAC playoff appearance since the 1998-1999 season, finishing with a 14-15-2 overall record and a 10-10-2 mark in the ECAC.

Danis, a second-team All-American and second team All-ECAC selection a year ago, is coming off a solid sophomore campaign. The Bears' goaltender compiled a .943 save percentage and a 1.63 GAA to go along with a 7-5-2 record and three shutouts in 15 conference games. Danis was named ECAC Avaya Player of the Week on January 20 and Goaltender of the Week for February 10 and 17. His .938 overall save percentage and 1.86 GAA ranked second and fifth, respectively, in the nation.

Brown opens its 2002-2003 season in the newly renovated Meehan Auditorium on Saturday, November 2, 2002 when the Bears host Harvard in a 7:00 p.m. contest. Brown and Harvard have faced each other in the season opener in nine of the past ten years, including the last four.
