Brown Men's Ice Hockey Announces Team Awards

The Brown men's ice hockey team held its annual season-ending banquet Friday, April 12 and seven different individuals were honored with team awards. The banquet, sponsored by the Brown Hockey Association, was held at the Wannamoisett Country Club in Rumford, RI.

Senior Brian Eklund (Braintree, MA) was awarded the Charles A. Robinson, Jr. Memorial Trophy for Academic Excellence. The trophy is awarded annually to the letterman that has attained the highest degree of academic excellence over the first seven semesters. A goaltender who was drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2000, Eklund is a Biology major. He earned ECAC All-Academic honors in 2000 and 2001.

The Charles A. Lanigan Memorial Trophy (BHA Award) is given the player who best represents the hockey program both on and off the ice. The Class of 2002, captain Josh Barker (Swift Current, SASK), Gianni Cantini (Montreal, QUE), Chris Dirkes (Marblehead, MA), Eklund, and J-F Labarre (St. Adolphe, QUE), shared the award this season.

Freshman forward Les Haggett (Norwood, NY) was selected as the Kevin R. Pope Memorial Trophy Winner (Rookie of the Year), while Barker was honored with the Patrick S. Jones Memorial Award, Brown Coaches' Award.

The Class of 1936 Hockey Trophy, Brown's MVP for the 2001-2002 season, was awarded to sophomore Yann Danis (Lafontaine, QUE), who earned several accolades during the season, including second team All-America, First Team All-Ivy, and Second Team All-ECAC.

The Brown team completed the 2001-2002 campaign with a 14-15-2 overall ledger, 10-10-2 in ECAC games, while completing one of the best seasons in recent history. Twenty-three letterwinners return to next year's squad.
