Men's Ice Hockey Takes Third Place at Subway Holiday Classic With Shootout Victory Over Findlay
Dec. 28, 2003
GRAND FORKS, ND - #12 Brown (6-3-3) and the University of Findlay (4-12-3) battled to a 1-1 overtime tie, with the Bears claiming the Third Place trophy after a 2-1 result in a shootout, on Sunday afternoon in the Third Place Game at North Dakota's Subway Holiday Classic at Engelstad Arena.
After a fairly even opening to the Bears' game against Findlay, Brown started to take control midway through the period on a power-play opportunity, during which they fired six shots at Findlay's Jon Horrell. Bruno struck first, at 13:34 of the opening period, when junior Chris Swon (Mendham, NJ) ripped a shot from the top of the right face-off circle past Horrell, high and on his glove-side. Freshman Sean Dersch (Edmonton, ALB) earned an assist on the goal.
Brown took back-to-back penalties just 23 seconds apart with under three minutes remaining in the period, and just as the first penalty had expired, the Oilers got on the board with a power-play tally at 19:44 of the first period. The Bears had successfully killed an Oilers 5x3 power-play opportunity for 1:37, but Findlay notched the equalizer just as junior Paul Crosty (Edmonton, ALB) was coming out of the box.
The two teams played 40 minutes of scoreless hockey following the Findlay goal at the end of the first period, despite Brown outshooting the Oilers 16-6 in the final frame, as the two teams headed into the five-minute overtime still knotted at 1-1.
Neither team found the back of the net in the five minute overtime, including a Findlay power-play, which Brown's top-ranked penalty-killing unit shutdown for the official final, 1-1. The Third Place finisher in the Subway Holiday Classic was determined by a shootout, which Brown won, 2-1. Scoring for Brown in the shootout were freshman Brian Ihnacak (Toronto, ONT) and senior Brent Robinson (Pointe Claire, QUE).
Senior Hobey Baker Candidate Yann Danis (Saint Jerome, QUE), who was named to the All-Tournament team, stopped 30 shots for the Bears and made four of five stops in the shootout. Brown returns to ECAC action this weekend when it travels to New York's Capital District to face RPI and Union on January 2nd and 3rd. Both games begin at 7:00 p.m.
