Bears Take Third in Subway Holiday Classic, Defeating Manitoba, 6-3, in Exhibition Win

Dec. 28, 2002

GRAND FORKS, ND - Brown men's ice hockey team scored three goals in a 1:03 span to open a 3-3 tie with just over two minutes remaining in the game as the Bears took third in the Subway Holiday Classic, defeating Manitoba, 6-3, in an exhibition game.

The Bears opened a scoreless game through nearly seven minutes, tallying on their first power-play opportunity of the night. Senior Keith Kirley (Leverett, MA) won the puck in a battle along the boards and found junior Brent Robinson (Pointe Claire, QUE) near the right race-off circle. Robinson sent a pass to sophomore Les Haggett (Norwood, NY) and the Bears' leading scorer used a fake to beat Manitoba's Jomar Cruz for the 1-0 lead.

Brown increased its lead to 2-0 just 4:49 into the second stanza and Kirley picked up his third point of the tournament as he tipped in a shot by junior Pascal Denis (Magog, QUE). Haggett also earned an assist on the play.

Manitoba got on the board at 8:01 of the second, as Andrew Kaminsky solved Brown's Scott Rowan (Vernon, BC), who had made 17 saves in just over 28 minutes of action.

The Bears regained the two-goal lead at 16:42 of the second period with their second power-play goal of the night. Senior Paul Esdale (Edmonton, ALB), who had a goal and an assist on Friday against North Dakota, rifled a slap-shot form the blueline and Haggett topped the puck past Cruz for his second goal of the night. Junior Scott Ford (Fort St. John, BC), who notched a goal against North Dakota, earned an assist on the goal.

The Bison added one more just five seconds into a power-play as David Cameron fired the puck from the left point and past Rowan. They scored their third of the game on a power-play at 16:45 of the third to knot the contest at 3-3.

However, the Bears exploded for three goals in a span of 1:03 for the 6-3 final. Senior Tye Korbl (Barnstable, MA) netted the game-winner at 17:59 as he raced down the ice with linemates Chris Swon (Mendham, NJ) and Jason Wilson (LaSalle, ONT) on a three-on-two, one-timing the puck into the net off a pass from Wilson.

Just 16 seconds later, Kirley scored his second of the night off a pass from Haggett and junior Shane Mudryk (Leduc, ALB) assisted an empty netter by Robinson with 58 seconds remaining.

For the game, Rowan finished with 23 saves. Brown resumes action on Friday as the Bears continue their non-conference schedule with a game against Umass-Lowell on January 3, at 7:00 p.m. in Meehan Auditorium.
