Dec. 28, 2001
MILWAUKEE, WI - Freshman Les Haggett (Norwood, NY) tallied the game-winning goal with less than three minutes left in the game and sophomore Yann Danis (Lafontaine, QUE) made 25 saves to lead Brown (4-5-1) to a 2-1 victory over Wisconsin (8-8-1) in the first round of the Bank One Badger Showdown Thursday evening at The Bradley Center.
Playing in their first game since December 8, Brown got on the board early, at 11:07 of the first stanza, taking advantage of their second power play of the night. Sophomore Adam Saunders (Moose Jaw, SASK) tallied his second goal in as many games when he tipped in a slap shot taken by classmate Vince Macri (Durham, NH) from the point. The assist was Macri's first point of the season, while Haggett, who also earned an assist on the play, tallied his fourth point in three games.
Neither team scored in the second period and the Bears headed into the third stanza still leading, 1-0. However, the Badgers tied the contest at 1-1 just 2:32 into the final period on a power play goal of their own.
With time running out for both teams and the game still knotted at 1-1, senior Chris Dirkes (Marblehead, MA) intercepted the puck on an attempted Wisconsin clear and took a shot that Wisconsin's Bernd Bruckler (Graz, Austria) could not handle. Haggett was on the doorstep to knock in the game-winner, the first of his career, and finishing with his second 1-1-2 outing in as many games.
For the game Danis stopped 25 shots between the pipes for Brown. With the win, Brown knocked host Wisconsin, who was looking to win consecutive Showdown Titles for the first time since 1995, out of the championship game for just the fourth time in 13 tournaments and the first time since 1998. The Bears continue action tomorrow when they face #6 New Hampshire, who defeated #10 Colorado College, 5-2, in the Championship game of the Bank One Badger Hockey Showdown.
