PROVIDENCE, RI - Sophomore Eric Slais (Fenton, MO) scored his first goal of the season 2:14 into overtime to lift the Brown men's ice hockey team (6-4-2, 3-3-1) to a 3-2 win over Yale (6-5-1, 3-4-0) in an Ivy and ECAC Hockey League game Saturday afternoon at Meehan Auditorium.

Brown came out flying and dominated the first five minutes of the game, maintaining possession in the offensive zone for nearly the entire five minutes. However, it was Yale that would score the first goal of the game. With the Bulldogs on a power-play, Mark Arcobello tipped a shot from Robert Page past freshman Dan Rosen (Syosset, NY) just 27 seconds into the man-advantage.

However, junior Jeff Prough (Farmington Hills, MI) knotted the game at 1-1 just 2:15 later, scoring 13 seconds into a Brown power-play at 7:53. Freshman Jeremy Russell (St. Albert, ALB) collected the puck from junior Brian McNary (Edmonton, ALB) and took a quick shot on net. Alec Richards made the initial stop, but the rebound bounced right out to Prough on the right side of the crease, and he back-handed it over Richards' shoulder, scoring his team-leading sixth goal of the year.

Senior Sean Dersch (Edmonton, ALB) took a five-minute penalty, and a game misconduct, late in the first period, which carried 1:05 over into the second period. Brown's penalty-kill was up to the task, keeping Yale from scoring the go-ahead goal, while gaining momentum of its own.

Just 3:51 after killing the penalty, junior Sean Hurley (Rutland, VT) increased the Bears' lead to 2-1 at 4:56 of the second period. After Yale attempted to clear the zone, Hurley stole the puck in neutral ice and fired a low shot on net that deflected in off Richards' right shin pad.

The third period belonged to Yale with the Bulldogs doubling Brown up on shots. Arcobello tied the game at 8:42, when he tipped a shot from Bill LeClerc behind Rosen. The Bears escaped the third period without another Yale tally, thanks in part to two posts and 12 saves by Rosen, setting the stage for Slais' game-winner.

Slais was bumped up to play along side senior Brian Ihnacak (Toronto, ONT) and junior Chris Poli (Milton, MA) after Dersch's penalty and he delivered with his first goal of the year. Ihnacak skated the puck in along the left wing and fed Poli in neutral ice. Poli dropped the puck for Slais, who centered the puck back to Poli. After Poli's shot was saved, the rebound bounced out to Slais at the bottom of the right face-off circle, and he fired the puck over Richards' right shoulder, emptying the Brown bench.

Brown, which was 0-6-7 in overtime last year, picked up its first overtime victory since eliminating RPI from the First Round of the 2005 ECACHL Playoffs with a 4-3 overtime win on March 5. The win also provides momentum for the Bears as they head into a three-week break for exams and the holidays.

Rosen was solid in net again, recording a career-high 39 saves, including 15 in the second period. The Bears return to action December 29th when they face UMass-Lowell in a 4:35 p.m. (MT) contest in first round action of the Denver Cup.
