Bears Drop Second Game of the Year, Falling to Colgate, 6-1

Dec. 6, 2003

HAMILTON, NY -Colgate (6-6-2, 3-3-0) scored four unanswered goals en route to a 6-1 win over Brown (6-2-2, 6-2-1), handing the Bears their second loss of the season while snapping their seven game unbeaten streak, Saturday evening in an ECAC contest at Starr Rink.

The two teams played an even start to the game, however Colgate put one up on the scoreboard first, scoring at 12:57 of the opening period. After the puck bounced off the skate of the referee and past the Brown goal-mouth, the Raiders fired a quick succession of shots at senior Hobey Baker Candidate Yann Danis (Saint Jerome, QUE), eventually scoring on a Kyle Doyle shot. Colgate added its second goal at 6:28 of the second period, as Paul Kelley beat Danis low and to his glove side for the 2-0 lead.

At 14:16 of the second period, Brown's power-play, which ranks first in the country, notched an extra-man goal to cut into Colgate's lead. Freshman leading scorer Brian Ihnacak (Toronto, ONT) scored his seventh goal of the year from the left face-off circle for Brown's first goal of the contest. Seniors Vince Macri (Durham, NH) and Scott Ford (Fort St. John, BC) each assisted on the goal.

However, just 25 seconds later, Adam Mitchell scored for the Raiders, as Colgate regained the two-goal advantage, taking a 3-1 lead at 14:41. Less than two minutes into the third period, the Raiders added their fourth goal to take a 4-1 lead at 1:17 of the final stanza. Just two minutes later, Colgate took a 5-1 lead with a goal by Jon Smyth. The Raiders extended their lead to 6-1 on a goal by Kyle Wilson at 10:13 of the third period, just seconds after Brown had successfully killed a Colgate power-play. After the goal, junior Scott Rowan (Vernon, BC) came in to relieve Danis.

Danis stopped 35 shots for the Bears in 50:13, while Rowan made one save in 9:47. Brown will take a three-week break for exams and the holidays, but will return to action on December 27th, when they travel to North Dakota to take part in the Subway Holiday Classic. Brown faces Wayne State in the first game on December 27th at 4:00 p.m.
