Yale Skates Past Bears, 5-2

Dec. 2, 2005

Box Score

PROVIDENCE, RI - Yale (2-8-0, 1-6-0) scored three third period goals to break a 2-2 tie and earn a 5-2 victory over the Brown men's ice hockey team (2-6-1, 2-5-0), in an ECAC Hockey League and Ivy League game at Meehan Auditorium. It was the first ECACHL win of the season for the Bulldogs, who also defeated the Bears for the first time since earning a 2-1 win in the 2003 ECAC playoffs.

Brown dominated the first part of the first period, earning three power-play chances during the first 10:00. However, just 49 seconds into their third man-advantage opportunity, the Bears were caught with too many men on the ice. With each team skating four players, sophomore Jeff Prough (Farmington Hills, MI) gave Brown a 1-0 lead just 26 seconds after the penalty on the Bears. Senior Pete LeCain (Bridgewater, NS) intercepted a Yale clearing attempt at the blueline and chipped the puck to sophomore Brian McNary (Edmonton, ALB), who sent to back to LeCain in the slot. LeCain fed Prough on the left wing, and he back-handed it over Alex Richards' shoulder for the 1-0 lead.

Yale scored two quick goals off of Brown miscues in the defensive zone to take a 2-1 lead just 2:35 into the second period. Michael Karwoski scored his first of the season 1:19 into the period on a two-on-one rush, and Matt Nelson notched his second of the year just 1:06 later with each team skating four players.

The two teams were called for a total of 44 minutes of penalties over the remainder of the period, resulting in several power-play chances for both teams, including one 5:00 man-advantage for each team. With the Bears skating on a five-on-three, sophomore David Robertson (Saunderstown, RI) collected the puck off a pass from Prough, and fired a slap-shot from the slot that beat Richards to tie the game at 2-2 7:58 into the period.

The Bears nearly took a 3-2 lead twice in the third period. The first time the puck went into the back of the net, after a scramble in front, but the referee ruled it has been kicked in and disallowed the goal. The second came on a Brown power-play when junior Antonin Roux (Danville, QUE) had a wide open net, but his shot from point-blank range was kicked away by Richards.

The Bulldogs scored two power-play goals 4:31 apart to take a 4-2 lead with 3:08 left to play. Brown pulled sophomore Adam D'Alba (Glencoe, IL) with 2:00 remaining for the extra attacker and Yale added an empty-net goal with 40 seconds left for the 5-2 final.

In net for Brown, D'Alba recorded 27 saves. The Bears continue action tomorrow night when they travel across the city to face Providence College in the 20th Annual battle for the Mayor's Cup at 7:00 p.m.
