PROVIDENCE, RI - Behind a strong goaltending effort from freshman Dan Rosen (Syosset, NY) and a balanced attack, the Brown men's ice hockey team (5-3-2, 2-2-1) handed St. Lawrence (7-5-0, 4-1-0) its first ECAC Hockey League loss of the season, earning a 4-1 victory on Friday night at Meehan Auditorium. Four different Bears scored in the win, as Brown has now won five of its last six games and three straight.
As they have for most of the season so far, the Bears came out and dominated St. Lawrence in the first period, outshooting the Saints by a 13-6 margin. Brown headed into the locker room with a 1-0 lead, on the strength of freshman Jeremy Russell's (St. Albert, ALB) first career goal. With the Bears on their first power-play of the game, Russell collected the puck from senior Sean Dersch (Edmonton, ALB) at the left point and fired a slap-shot that beat St. Lawrence's Alex Petizian through the five-hole.
The Bears nearly scored twice more before the end of the period with both chances coming off a solid shift by Brown's fourth line as sophomores Eric Slais (Fenton, MO) and Ryan Garbutt (Winnipeg, MAN), and freshman Jordan Pietrus (Vermilion, ALB) put sustained pressure on St. Lawrence for over a minute. During the shift, Slais hit a post and Pietrus narrowly missed scoring his first career goal as he tipped a shot from junior Sean Hurley (Rutland, VT) just wide of the net.
Brown increased its lead to 2-0 just 61 seconds into the second period. Senior Antonin Roux (Danville, QUE) battled for the puck at the right face-off circle and it bounded out to junior Jeff Prough (Farmington Hills, MI), who was at the top of the slot. Prough back-handed the puck towards the net and sophomore Matt Vokes (Auburn, MA) tipped the puck over the stick of Petizian and into the back of the net.
Senior Brian Ihnacak (Toronto, ONT) scored with just 1:10 remaining in the period as Brown grabbed a 3-0 lead with its second power-play goal of the evening. Junior Chris Poli (Medfield, MA) fed Dersch to the left of the goal and Dersch used a perfect centering pass to Ihnacak, who was at the other side of the crease. Ihnacak one-timed the puck past Petizian from the doorstep, scoring his second goal in as many games.
The Saints got on the board when Kyle Rank redirected a centering feed from Kevin DeVergilio past Rosen with St. Lawrence skating on the power-play.
The Saints pulled Petizian with 3:15 remaining for the extra attacker, but Rosen and the rest of the Brown defense stood strong in handing St. Lawrence its first ECAC Hockey League loss of the year. Sophomore Sean Muncy (Chesterfield, MO) added an empty-netter for Brown with 1:02 remaining for the 4-1 final.
Rosen, who leads the nation with a 1.25 goals against average and a .961 save percentage, picked up his fourth win, stopping 24 shots. The Bears return to action tomorrow night when they host Clarkson in a 7:00 p.m. League battle.
