Men's Hockey Surges Past St. Lawrence, 8-0
Nov. 29, 2003
Providence, RI - The Brown men's hockey team is off to its best start since the 1975-76 season after blanking St. Lawrence 8-0 Saturday night at Meehan Auditorium. Brown used a balanced attack, which allowed five different players to score. Freshman Brian Ihnacak (Toronto, ONT) led the Bears with two goals and two assists on the night. Senior goalie Yann Danis (Sainte Jerome, QUE) made 38 saves in his 3rd shutout of the season, and 11th of his career. The Bears, who have gone undefeated in their last six games, are now 6-1-1 on the season.
It was the 1975-76 team, which started 7-1 through its first eight games, that set the Brown record for wins in a season with twenty-three, a record that still stands to this day. The win was the Bears largest margin of defeat since Dec. 28th, 1994, when Brown defeated Air Force 10-1.
Brown opened up the first period at 2:30 with a decisive goal by freshman Antonin Roux (Danville, QUE) off of a quick pass from classmate Ihnacak. The early lead gave Brown the confidence to continually push the puck up the ice for the rest of the night. Senior assistant captain Les Haggett (Norwood, NJ) would put the Bears up on the board second with a hard wrist shot during a Brown power-play at 12:37. Assisting on that goal were assistant captain Brent Robinson (Pointe Claire, QUE) and Ihnacak. Brown's third goal came only two minutes and forty-three seconds later when freshman Sean Dersch (Edmonton, ALB) scored off a pass from senior Pascal Denis (Magog, QUE) and senior Vince Macri (Durham, NH) at 14:20.
Bruno again came out strong in the second period and with only 6:19 into play, Robinson played the puck to the back of the net off a great pass from Haggett and junior Mike Meech (Coquitlam, BC). Brown scored its fifth goal of the night with just two seconds left in the second period. Roux gave a pass to a wide-open Ihnacak who buried the puck.
The third period saw much of the same Bruno action. On another Brown power play, Ihnacak scored off a pass from Macri at 9:52. Robinson put another one in at the 17:05 mark from Meech. Brown would see their eighth and final goal come thirty-seven seconds later when Dersch beat his defender to easily place the puck between St. Lawrence goalie's legs off a direct pass from junior Chris Swon (Mendham, NJ).
Brown continues action at Cornell Friday Dec. 5th at 7pm.
