CANTON, NY - Sophomores Sean Dersch (Edmonton, ALB) and Brian Ihnacak (Toronto, ONT) each scored two goals to propel the Brown men's ice hockey team (4-4-1, 3-3-1) to its third straight victory, a 4-1 win over St. Lawrence (7-7-1, 3-4-0), in an ECACHL contest Saturday evening at Appleton Arena.
St. Lawrence came out of the doors flying, while outshooting Brown 15-2 during the first 20:00 of action. The Bears only legitimate scoring chance came early in the period when freshman Jeff Prough (Farmington Hills, MI) had a breakway, but he was taken down and went sliding into the boards.
Less than two minutes later, the Bears took a penalty to even things up, four-on-four, and after the Saints went up on the man advantage, T.J. Trevelyan gave St. Lawrence a 1-0 lead at 5:03 of the period. However, the score could have been 3-0 before the end of the period, but a Saints' goal was called back due to a hand-pass before the goal, and a second shot hit the post, just barely missing the back of the net.
The Bears were more aggressive in the second period, and eventually it paid of in the form of the tying goal at 9:47 of the second frame. Dersch won the draw to the right of St. Lawrence's goalie back to freshman Sean Hurley (Rutland, VT). Hurley took a quick shot from the point that was saved by Mike McKenna, but Dersch was there to knock the rebound in for the 1-1 tie. The assist was Hurley's seventh point in the past six games.
St. Lawrence went up on the power-play early in the third and despite several scoring opportunities, the strong play of freshman Adam D'Alba (Glencoe, IL) and the Brown penalty-killers prevented the Saints from increasing their lead. Just 2:23 after the Bears killed the penalty, Dersch gave Brown a 2-1 lead with his second goal of the night at 8:17 of the period. Freshman Brian McNary (Edmonton, ALB) and sophomore Antonin Roux (Danville, QUE) each earned assists on the goal.
Ihnacak gave the Bears a 3-1 lead at 13:42 of the third period when he buried the puck past McKenna off a feed from senior Les Haggett (Norwood, NY). The Saints pulled McKenna with one minute left for the extra attacker, and Ihnacak tallied an empty-net goal with one second remaining for the 4-1 victory.
D'Alba finished with 43 saves, while earning his third straight win. The Bears continue action next weekend when they host RPI and Union in a pair of ECACHL hockey games, Brown's final two games before breaking for exams.
