DULUTH, MN - Senior Les Haggett (Norwood, NY) scored two goals for the Brown men's ice hockey team (1-4-1), but it wasn't enough as #7 Minnesota Duluth (6-3-2) defeated the Bears, 6-2, in a non-league men's ice hockey contest Friday evening at the DECC.
After opening the season with five straight ECACHL contests, the Bears put forth a strong first period of hockey in their first non-league game of the season. Haggett gave Brown a 1-0 lead midway through the first period when he knocked in his own rebound from between the face-off circles. Freshman Sean Hurley (Rutland, VT) earned an assist on the power-play goal, which was scored at 10:41 of the first.
The Bears had two chances to score early in the second period, both of them on the power-play, but the Bulldogs evened the score at 1-1 on a power-play of their own 7:40 into the period. A turnover in the Brown zone led to Duluth's second of the night at 13:44 and the Bulldogs added two more over the next 1:42 to take a 4-1 lead with 4:34 left in the second period.
Haggett brought the Bears back to within two goals, 4-2, at 17:28 of the second with his second power-play goal of the night. Senior Mike Meech (Coquitlam, BC) fed Haggett in the slot from behind the net and the Bears' Captain one-timed it past Duluth's goalie. Sophomore Brian Ihnacak (Toronto, ONT) also earned an assist on the goal.
Duluth began the third period on the man advantage and just 38 seconds into the frame the Bulldogs capitalized on the power-play to take a 5-2 lead. The Bulldogs added their third power-play goal of the night with 5:26 remaining in the game for a 6-2 advantage. Following the goal, freshman Adam D'Alba (Glencoe, IL), making his first career appearance for Brown, relieved junior Kevin Kliman (Toronto, ONT) in net.
Kliman finished with 18 saves in 54:34, while D'Alba stopped 2 shots in 5:26. Brown and Duluth face each other again tomorrow evening in an 8:05 p.m. contest.
