Bears' Third-Period Come Back Falls Short as #8 Clarkson Posts 4-2 Victory
Nov. 17, 2007
POTSDAM, NY - Seniors Chris Poli (Medfield, MA) and Jeff Prough (Farmington Hills, MI) scored third-period power-play goals, but it wasn't enough as #8 Clarkson (9-3-0, 6-1-0) used a three-goal second period to earn a 4-2 victory over the Brown men's ice hockey team (1-3-3, 1-2-3) on Saturday evening at Cheel Arena.
In a period that saw Clarkson hold a 15-9 advantage in shots, the Bears and the Golden Knights headed into the first intermission knotted at zero as both sophomore Dan Rosen (Syosset, NY) and David Leggio stopped everything they saw in the period.
Clarkson broke the tie early in the second period though when Scott Freeman was alone in the slot and knocked a rebound into a partially open net at 5:31.
Neither team was able to establish much of a rhythm after the goal as the middle portion of the period saw the two teams combine for five penalties in a span of less than 10 minutes. After stopping the Golden Knights on their first five power-play chances, Brown gave up a Clarkson extra-man goal just eight seconds into their sixth advantage when Chris D'Alvise one-timed a centering feed from Nick Dodge past a sliding Rosen at 17:07.
Lauri Tuohimaa increased Clarkson's lead to 3-0 just 33 seconds later when he scored off D'Alvise's second assist of the night.
The Bears opened the third frame with 1:59 remaining on a power-play and just 16 seconds into the period, Poli cut into Clarkson's lead with his first goal of the season. Senior captain Sean Hurley (Rutland, VT) earned an assist on the goal, the 44th of his career, to move into ninth all-time at Brown for career assists by a defenseman.
Matt Becca nearly gave the hosts a 4-1 lead 2:59 into the period when he skated in with only Rosen to beat, but the Bears' netminder stopped Becca's breakaway chance to hold the score at 3-1. However, just 39 seconds later, Clarkson did regain the three-goal lead, 4-1, when D'Alvise scored his second of the game, lifting the puck over a diving Rosen on a Golden Knight power-play, while also picking up his fourth point of the contest.
Prough scored Brown's second power-play goal of the game to bring the Bears with within 4-2 at 12:29, with Hurley and sophomore Devin Timberlake (Port Alberni, BC) each earning assists.
Brown pulled Rosen with 1:54 remaining for the extra attacker, but Clarkson was able to hold on for the victory.
Rosen finished with 31 saves, Leggio made 29 saves for Clarkson. The Bears will take a break from ECAC Hockey competition and play three straight games against teams from Hockey East beginning Saturday, November 24th with a 7:00 p.m. contest at New Hampshire.
