CAMBRIDGE, MA - Junior Jeff Prough (Farmington Hills, MI) scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal midway through the first period as the Brown men's ice hockey team (2-2-2, 1-1-1) won its second straight game, and first ECAC Hockey League victory of the season, with a 2-1 defeat of Harvard (2-5-0, 1-5-0). The victory is also head coach Roger Grillo's 100th career victory, as he becomes just the second Brown mentor to record 100 career wins, and the first since James Fullerton (1956-70).
Despite getting outshot, 10-7, in the opening period, the Bears headed into the first intermission with a 2-1 lead on the strength of goals from senior Sean Dersch (Edmonton, ALB) and Prough. Dersch gave the Bears a 1-0 lead just 6:35 into the game when he scored off a feed from classmate Brian Ihnacak (Toronto, ONT) with Brown on their only power-play opportunity of the period. Junior Sean Hurley (Rutland, VT) also earned an assist on the goal.
Prough increased the Bears' lead to 2-0 8:17 later when he one-timed a feed from junior Brian McNary (Edmonton, ALB) past Harvard's Justin Tobe at 14:52. Sophomore Matt Vokes (Auburn, MA) continued his season-opening scoring streak, notching an point for the sixth straight game with an assist on the goal.
The Bears nearly escaped the first period with a 2-0 lead, but a Harvard power-play goal with just 44 seconds remaining in the period cut Brown's lead to 2-1.
That would be all the scoring for the game, as the two teams played scoreless hockey for the final 40:44. The Crimson pulled Tobe with 58 seconds remaining for the extra attacker, but the Brown defense shut down the Harvard attack in the final seconds, including the final 38 in the Bears' defensive zone.
Rosen finished with 26 saves, while Tobe made 13 stops for Harvard. Brown returns to action tomorrow night, November 18, when it faces Dartmouth in a 7:00 p.m. League contest.
