HAMILTON, NY - The Brown men's ice hockey team (0-1-1, 0-1-1) dropped a heartbreaking 3-2 overtime decision to Colgate (6-2-0, 1-0-0) in an ECAC Hockey League contest on Saturday evening at Starr Rink.
After a scoreless first period of action, the Raiders took a 1-0 lead at 10:37 of the second stanza on a goal by Dave Thomas.
However, with just 29 seconds left before the second intermission, sophomore Brian Ihnacak (Toronto, ONT) scored his first goal of the season to knot the game at 1-1. He was assisted by senior Mike Meech (Coquitlam, BC) and junior Adam Tichauer (Toronto, ONT), who each earned their first points of the year.
Just two seconds after that goal, the Raiders Zac Tataryn took an interference penalty, which carried over into the third frame. Ihnacak capitalized on the power-play, giving Brown a 2-1 lead just 1:21 into the final period. His power-play goal was assisted by Meech and sophomore Sean Dersch (Edmonton, ALB).
With Brown within minutes of earning its first win at Starr Rink since February of 1993, Colgate forced overtime when Dustin Gillanders tallied his second goal of the year with just 3:55 left in the contest.
The Bears took a penalty at 19:25 of the third and Jon Smyth scored a power-play goal at 1:22 of the extra frame, with just three seconds left on the Brown penalty, to give Colgate the 3-2 win.
Senior Scott Rowan (Vernon, BC) stopped 26 shots, including all nine he faced in the first period. The Bears will look to rebound tomorrow night in Ithaca when they take on Cornell in a 7:00 p.m. ECACHL and Ivy League contest.
