PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown men's ice hockey team hosted Trois Rivieres on Thursday evening, October 23, in an exhibition game, as the Bears unofficially opened the 2008-2009 season. Senior Ryan Garbutt (Winnipeg, MAN), who is Brown's leading returning scorer from a year ago, scored a power-play goal midway through the first period, which would be all the Bears would need for the win.
Garbutt's goal came at the 12:35 mark of the first period on Brown's first power-play chance of the game and just 1:20 into the man-advantage. Sophomore Jeremy Russell (St. Albert, ALB) and senior Matt Vokes (Auburn, MA) worked a give-and-go along the right boards, before Vokes sent the puck across the ice to Garbutt near the left face-off circle. Garbutt collected the puck and beat the Trois Rivieres goalie top-shelf for the 1-0 lead.
Brown finished the first period with an 11-4 advantage in shots, as junior Dan Rosen (Syosset, NY) stopped all four shots he faced in the period. Neither team generated many quality chances in the second period, as Brown held a slight, 11-9, advantage in shots. Rosen stopped six shots in 11:37, before giving way to senior Mark Sibbald (Ridgeway, ONT), who finished the period with three saves.
Both teams had 11 shots in the final 20 minutes with Sibbald making one save in the first 4:48. Freshman Mike Clemente (Great Falls, VA) then came in for Sibbald and stopped all 10 shots he faced in the final 15:12.
The Bears open their season officially next weekend when they host Yale, Princeton, and Ontario Institute of Technology in the Showcase at Meehan, October 31 and November 1. Yale will face UOIT on Friday at 4:30, followed by the Brown vs. Princeton game at 7:30. Saturday's action features Princeton against UOIT in the 4:30 game and Brown vs. Yale in the 7:30 game. Both of Brown's contests count as non-league regular season games.
