Men's Icers Fall To #2 Cornell, 2-0, In ECAC Semi-Finals
March 21, 2003
ALBANY, NY - The Cornell Big Red (27-4-1, 19-2-1), ranked second in the country, handed Brown (16-13-5, 10-8-4) a 2-0 loss in the first semi-final game of the 2003 ECAC Championship Tournament Friday afternoon at Albany's Pepsi Arena.
After nearly two periods of scoreless action, during which Brown was out-shot 20-6, the Big Red took a 1-0 lead with just 2:06 remaining in the second period. Just 20 seconds after a Brown power-play had expired, Cornell's Cam Abbott fed Greg Hornby on a two-on-one break, as Hornby lifted the puck past junior goalie Yann Danis (Saint-Jerome, QUE) to his right, breaking open a 0-0 deadlock.
Cornell increased its lead at 11:03 of the third period on a goal by Travis Bell. After several failed attempts to clear the puck of the zone by the Bears, Bell fired a slap shot from the left point that beat Danis glove-side for the two goal advantage.
For the game, Danis stopped 27 shots in net, while Cornell's David LeNeveu, the ECAC Co-Player of the Year, made 11 saves for the Big Red. Brown continues action tomorrow, Saturday, March 22, at 3:30 p.m. facing the loser of the Harvard/Dartmouth contest in the consolation game of the ECAC Championship Tournament.
