PRINCETON, NJ - Sophomore Sean Muncy (Chesterfield, MO) scored his eighth goal of the year at 1:24 of overtime to lift the Brown men's ice hockey team (11-13-6, 6-12-4) to a 4-3 win over Princeton (13-14-3, 10-10-2) in game one of the ECACHL first round best-of-three series. The goal was Muncy's third point in as many games as Brown is now 6-0-1 in games in which he scores a goal.
Just 14 seconds into the opening period, the Bears went on the man advantage, and it took Brown all of 68 seconds after the Princeton penalty to grab a 1-0 lead. Senior Brian Ihnacak (Toronto, ONT) collected the puck behind the net and sent it up to junior Chris Poli (Medfield, MA) at the blueline. Poli fired a puck into traffic and it deflected off the skate of a Princeton defender and right to sophomore Ryan Garbutt (Winnipeg, MAN), who turned and fired the puck into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
Princeton scored back-to-back goals 1:23 apart early in the second period, netting a power-play goal at 6:53 and the game's first even-strength goal at 8:16.
However, the Bears battled back and tied the game just 2:18 later when junior Brian McNary (Edmonton, ALB) scored Brown's second power-play goal of the game. Junior Sean Hurley (Rutland, VT) carried the puck up the left wing and connected with junior Jeff Prough (Farmington Hills, MI) at the blue-line. McNary received the puck in the slot, and his initial shot clanged off the crossbar. But the puck bounced out and deflected into the net off Zane Kalemba's back, as McNary posted at least one point for the eighth straight game.
Garbutt scored Brown's third power-play goal of the game at 7:39 of the third period to give the Bears 3-2 lead. Freshman Jeremy Russell (St. Albert, ALB) fired a rocket from the right point into the slot, where Ihnacak redirected the puck across the crease to Garbutt, who lifted the puck into the open net for his second goal of the game.
The Tigers went on the power-play at 14:48 and with 27 seconds left on the power-play and 3:39 remaining in regulation, Princeton pulled Kalemba for a six-on-four advantage. Though the Tigers did not score on the power-play, Daryl Marcoux knocked a rebound over freshman Dan Rosen (Syosset, NY) with 3:07 left to play, just five seconds after Brown had killed the penalty.
The Bears had a last-minute rush, but Kalemba saved Hurley's shot from the bottom of the right face-off circle as the two teams headed for overtime for the fifth straight time.
Brown opened the overtime with 54 seconds remaining on a power-play, but Princeton was able to kill the advantage and had a chance to score just after it expired. With the puck deep in the Bears' zone, Muncy chipped the puck up to senior Sean Dersch (Edmonton, ALB). Dersch hustled out of the zone, got around his defender and threw the puck across the crease, where Ihnacak just got a shot off. The rebound popped out to Muncy, who was crashing the net and buried his shot, clearing the Brown bench. The assist was Dersch's fifth point in four games since returning from an injury.
Rosen recorded 36 saves, while Kalemba posted 23 saves for the Tigers. Brown and Princeton will meet again tomorrow night at 7:00 in game-two of the best-of-three series.
