Rosen Earns First Career Shutout as Bears Close Regular Season With 2-0 Victory over Union
March 1, 2008
PROVIDENCE, RI - Senior Sean Hurley's (Rutland, VT) five-on-three power play goal 4:56 into the second period was all the Bears (6-19-4, 6-13-3) would need en route to a 2-0 victory over Union (15-12-6, 10-7-5) in their regular season finale. Senior Jeff Prough (Farmington Hills, MI) assisted on both of Brown's goals and senior Chris Poli (Medfield, MA) had an assist on the second goal, as three of the five seniors skating in the final career home game picked up a point. Brown is now 5-0-3 in its last eight "senior day" games. Sophomore Dan Rosen (Syosset, NY) also earned his first career shutout, stopping 28 shots, including 11 in the final period as Brown was outshot 11-5 in the final 20 minutes.
The game remained scoreless through nearly the first 25 minutes, with Brown dominating the pace of play and outshooting Union 15-7 in the first period. The Dutchmen took back-to-back penalties 1:11 apart to open the second period and just 30 seconds into the two-man advantage, senior Sean Hurley (Rutland, VT) gave the Bears a 1-0 lead, scoring from the bottom of the right face-off circle. Senior Jeff Prough (Farmington Hills, MI) earned a point for the sixth straight game with the immediate pass to Hurley, while sophomore Devin Timberlake (Port Alberni, BC) also assisted on the goal.
Brown earned another five-on-three advantage 1:15 later, but couldn't increase its lead and then Union went up on a five-on-three at 11:38. The Dutchmen were camped out in the Bears' zone for nearly the entire time, but sophomore Dan Rosen (Syosset, NY) was up to the task, stopping four shots during the power play.
Union threw everything at Brown in the final period, looking for the tying goal and outshooting the Bears at one point, 9-1. With 5:03 remaining, the Bears put the game away when junior Ryan Garbutt (Winnipeg, MAN) beat Justin Mrazek for another power play goal, his team-leading fifth power play goal of the season, ninth overall, and his seventh point in the Bears' last four goals.
Mrazek matched Rosen with 28 saves, including all 15 he faced in the first period. The Bears return to action next weekend when they will travel to Quinnipiac for a best-of-three ECAC Hockey First Round Series. Action begins Friday night at 7:00, with game two slated for Saturday and game three scheduled for Sunday, if necessary.
