Box Score

PROVIDENCE, RI - Sophomore leading scorer Jeff Prough (Farmington Hills, MI) scored two goals and assisted two others, while freshman Eric Slais (Fenton, MO) scored his sixth of the season and added two assists to help lead the Brown men's ice hockey team (4-18-7, 3-14-5) to a 5-3 win over Quinnipiac (17-16-1, 8-13-1) in an ECAC Hockey League contest on Saturday evening at Meehan Auditorium.

Playing in their final home game of the season, the Bears came out with energy and determination, scoring three goals in the opening period of play. With Brown on the power-play, senior Paul Crosty (Edmonton, ALB) scored his first goal of the season, firing a slap-shot from the left point at 9:26 of the first. Freshman Matt Vokes (Auburn, MA) and junior Antonin Roux (Danville, QUE) each assisted on the goal.

Just 4:35 later, at 14:01, Prough gave Brown a 2-0 lead with a highlight reel worthy goal on Brown's second power-play chance of the night. After his first shot was saved by Bud Fisher, Prough ended up lying on the ice, but batted at the puck and just got enough of his stick on it to lift it top-shelf, knocking Fisher's water bottle up in the air. Slais and sophomore Brian McNary (Edmonton, ALB) each earned assists on the goal, Prough's 14th of the season and his seventh straight game with at least one point.

Slais increased Brown's lead to 3-0 at 17:24 when he knocked in the rebound of a shot from freshman Ryan Garbutt (Winnipeg, MAN) with Brown on a three-on-two rush. Garbutt fired a shot from the left wing that Fisher saved, but the rebound bounced out to Prough. Prough spun around and back-handed it to Slais, who was streaking through the slot and he one-timed it past Fisher, lighting the lamp with his sixth goal of the year.

Quinnipiac dominated the second period, outshooting Brown 23-8, including five straight shots in the final minute of play, on a five-on-three advantage for the Bobcats, during which Fisher was out of the net for the final 25 seconds of the period, creating a six-on-three chance.

David Marshall brought Quinnipiac to within 3-1 at 5:23 when he knocked in the rebound of a shot from Mark Van Vliet, but Garbutt regained the three-goal lead for Brown before the end of the period.

The Bears' top line of Slais, Garbutt and Prough broke up a Quinnipiac clearing opportunity in neutral ice and skated back into the zone. Garbutt wrested a low-angle shot from the bottom of the left face-off circle that beat Fisher five-hole.

The Bobcats scored two goals in the third period to come to within 4-3, scoring just 2:27 into the third and again at 19:20 with the extra-attacker after Fisher had been pulled.

After the third Quinnipiac goal, Roux won the face-off to Prough, and he fired it into the back of the empty net from center ice with 35 seconds left, sealing the 5-3 victory for the Bears, Brown's first win since defeating UConn on January 10th and its first ECAC Hockey League win since defeating St. Lawrence on November 12th.

In net for Brown, sophomore Adam D'Alba (Glencoe, IL) recorded 41 saves, while Fisher stopped 31 shots in net for Quinnipiac. Brown continues action next weekend when it travels to St. Lawrence for the first round of the ECACHL playoffs.
