Vokes' Goal with 6:34 Left Lifts Bears to 3-3 Tie with Princeton
Feb. 24, 2006
PROVIDENCE, RI - Freshman Matt Vokes (Auburn, MA) scored the game-tying goal with 6:34 left in regulation to lift the Brown men's ice hockey team (3-18-7, 2-14-5) to a 3-3 tie with Princeton (9-12-3, 6-12-3) in an ECAC Hockey League and Ivy League contest on Friday evening at Meehan Auditorium.
The two teams played an action-packed first period of hockey, with Brown edging Princeton in shots, 10-9. The Bears kept the score knotted at zero, having to kill off two penalties in the first seven minutes of play. Brown grabbed a 1-0 lead at 11:34 of the first when sophomore Sean Hurley's (Rutland, VT) wrist-shot from just inside the blue line deflected in off the post on Eric Leroux's blocker-side. Sophomore Jeff Prough (Farmington Hills, MI) stretched his point-scoring streak to six games with an assist on the goal.
The Bears appeared to have gone up 2-0 at 9:47 of the second period with 59 seconds left on a Princeton power-play. Senior Joe Bauer (Apple Valley, MN) fed Prough in the slot and his shot beat Leroux stick-side, hitting the bottom of the crossbar and lighting the lamp. The referee initially signaled for a goal, but after conferencing with the linesman, it was ruled that the puck had hit the crossbar and never went in.
With just seven seconds left in the period, the Tigers tied the game at 1-1 when the puck deflected into the back of the net off Kevin Westgarth's skate.
Brown went up 2-1 with a power-play goal from the stick of freshman Eric Slais (Fenton, MO), who fired the puck past Leroux off a centering pass from sophomore Brian McNary (Edmonton, ALB). Hurley sent a long up-ice pass to McNary, who received the puck at the left point and skate into the zone along the left boards.
However, Princeton scored two goals in a span of 33 seconds to take a 3-2 lead at 6:41 of the third.
Both teams had several chances to score in overtime, but the Tigers and the Bears settled for a 3-3 tie, playing to a draw for the second time this season. It was Brown's 11th overtime game of the year and Princeton's fifth straight overtime contest.
In net for Brown, sophomore Adam D'Alba (Glencoe, IL) recorded 33 saves, while Leroux stopped 27 shots in net for Princeton. Brown continues action tomorrow evening when it hosts Quinnipiac in the final regular season game.
