Bears Win Shootout With Dartmouth, 5-4
Feb. 22, 2008
HANOVER, NH - Junior Ryan Garbutt (Winnipeg, MAN) scored a goal and assisted two others, including the game-winning goal, as the Brown men's ice hockey team (5-17-4, 5-11-3) earned a 5-4 victory over Dartmouth (9-13-4, 4-12-3) in ECAC Hockey and Ivy League action Friday evening at Thompson Arena. The victory gives Brown its first win in Hanover since February 11, 2000, and also marks its first season sweep of the Big Green since 1997-1998.
The Bears dominated the opening 10 minutes of the game, but it was Dartmouth that would score the first goal, as Joe Gaudet redirected the puck past sophomore Dan Rosen (Syosset, NY) at 13:20.
However, Brown answered with two goals in the next 1:18 to grab a 2-1 lead after one period. Sophomore Jordan Pietrus (Vermillion, ALB) scored his sixth of the year 30 seconds after the Big Green goal to get Brown on the board. He collected the puck from junior Matt Palmer (Anchorage, AK) and went for the wrap around. Pietrus waited for Joe Grossman to drop, before roofing the puck into the top of the net for his sixth goal of the year.
Less than a minute later, at 14:38, senior Jeff Prough (Farmington Hills, MI) connected on the power play, giving Brown a 2-1 lead. Senior Sean Hurley (Rutland, VT) passed the puck up to Prough along the left wing. After making nice a move to get around his defenseman, Prough fired a shot from the bottom of the left face-off circle that beat Grossman to the far corner.
Dartmouth tied the game at 9:33 of the second, scoring just as a full two-minute five-on-three was expiring. The Bears had successfully killed the two-man advantage, during which the Big Green were in the zone for nearly the entire time, thanks in large part to Rosen making five saves, and sophomore Aaron Volpatti (Revelstoke, BC) and senior David Robertson (Saunderstown, RI) each blocking one shot. Just as the two players were returning to the ice, Evan Stephens fired a shot from the top of the right face-off circle that beat Rosen glove-side.
The Big Green took a five-minute penalty at 11:19 and 2:05 into the power play, Garbutt regained the one-goal lead for the Bears with his seventh goal of the year at 13:24, giving Brown a lead it would not relinquish. Sophomore Devin Timberlake (Port Alberni, BC) and senior Paul Baier (North Kingstown, RI) both assisted on the goal.
The two teams then traded goals over the next 2:32 with each team skating four players. Senior Chris Poli (Medfield, MA) briefly gave the Bears a 4-2 lead with his fifth of the year at 14:50. Junior Matt Vokes (Auburn, MA) made a nice play at the top of the right face-off circle and passed to Poli, who skated across the crease, spun, and fired the puck past Grossman.
However, just 1:06 later, Scott Fleming answered for Dartmouth as the Big Green made it a one-goal game heading into the final period.
The Bears killed three straight penalties to during the first nine minutes of the third period to hold onto the 4-3 lead. Freshman David Brownschidle (Lawrenceville, NJ) then increased Brown's lead to 5-3 at 12:46, knocking in the rebound of a shot by Garbutt. Poli started the play in Brown's defensive zone, connecting with Garbutt with a long pass. Garbutt had a semi-breakaway and was able to get a shot off, which Grossman saved. However, Brownschidle was crashing the net and flicked the rebound over Grossman for the two-goal cushion.
Just 1:03 after the goal, Dartmouth went up on its ninth power play of the night, and J.T. Wyman capitalized 17 seconds into the man-advantage to make it a one-goal game for the fourth time of the night
Rosen finished with 38 saves, while posting his 14th game this season with at least 30 saves. Grossman made 19 saves for the Big Green, as Brown was outshot, 38-19. The Bears return to action tomorrow evening when they travel to Cambridge, MA to face Harvard at 7:00 p.m.
