Men's Icers Score Five Unanswered Goals In Handing Colgate a 5-2 Loss

Feb. 15, 2003

PROVIDENCE, RI - Brown (11-10-3, 9-7-2) scored five unanswered goals to erase a two-goal deficit and defeat Colgate (11-16-3, 6-10-2), 5-2, in an ECAC men's ice hockey contest Saturday evening at Meehan Auditorium. With the victory, the Bears snapped a nine-game winless streak against the Raiders.

Colgate took an early 2-0 lead with back-to-back goals scored just 1:34 apart in the first five minutes of the game. Scooter Smith notched a power-play goal at the 3:28 mark of the opening period, while Adam Mitchell struck at 5:02 as the Raiders, who were shutout 7-0 at Harvard last night shocked a Brown team that was coming off a 2-2 tie with #2 Cornell.

However, Brown chipped away at the lead just 2:52 later when junior Scott Ford (Fort St. John, BC) scored on the power-play with a slap shot from the left point. Junior Brent Robinson (Pointe Claire, QUE) and senior Paul Esdale (Edmonton, ALB) each assisted on the goal.

With the clock ticking down at the end of the first period, the Bears knotted the contest at 2-2 with just 15 seconds left before the first intermission. Moving down the ice on a fast rush, Esdale tipped in the rebound of a shot by sophomore Les Haggett (Norwood, NY). Robinson earned the other assist on the goal.

The Bears opened up the 2-2 game in the second period, scoring two goals as Brown held onto a 4-2 lead heading into the final stanza. In a quick succession of shots, freshman Rugo Santini (Winchester, MA) scored his first collegiate goal to give Bruno a 3-2 lead. Linemates Chris Swon (Mendham, NJ) and Pascal Denis (Magog, QUE) each earned assists on the goal, which was scored 6:54 into the period. Gerry Burke (Milton, MA) each tallied assists.

Senior Jason Wilson (LaSalle, ONT) scored the fifth and final goal of the game at 10:43 of the third period with senior Chris Legg (London, ONT) and junior Vince Macri (Durham, NH) each tallying assists.

For the game, Yann Danis (Saint-Jerome, QUE) stopped 28 shots in net. Brown, which is currently in a three-way tie for fourth place in the ECAC, continues action on the road next weekend at Vermont and Dartmouth. Both games begin at 7:00 p.m.
