HAMDEN, CT - #16 Quinnipiac (17-7-4, 9-3-4) scored late in the first period and early in the third and added an empty-net goal in the final minute to post a 3-0 victory over the Brown men's ice hockey team (3-16-4, 3-10-3) on Sunday afternoon at the TD Banknorth Sports Center in a game televised live on NESN.
The Bears were all over Quinnipiac during the first 10 minutes of the game, holding a 9-2 advantage in shots during this time, and generating several quality chances. However, over the next 10 minutes, the shot category began to even out and the Bobcats grabbed a 1-0 lead with just 1:12 remaining in the period. Brown ended up outshooting Quinnipiac, 14-12, for the period.
With Brown sophomore Jordan Pietrus (Vermillion, ALB) down on the ice at the left face-off circle after getting hit, Mike Atkinson was stationed just in front of Pietrus and had no one on him. He was able to get a clean look at the goal, beating sophomore Dan Rosen (Syosset, NY) under his right leg at 18:48.
Just before the goal, Rosen made a glove save on Greg Holt from just about where Atkinson scored his goal. The puck bounced over Rosen and was sitting in the crease, but sophomore Aaron Volpatti (Revelstoke, BC) got to it just in time to swat it out danger.
The two teams played a scoreless second period of hockey with the Bobcats doubling Brown up on shots, 15-7. Jamie Bates nearly gave Quinnipiac a 2-0 lead in the eighth minute with the Bobcats on their first of two second-period power play chances. Greg Holt fired a shot from the center of the blueline that Bates, stationed in front of the net, tipped towards the left side of the goal, but the puck clanged off the post.
Atkinson's goal late in the first period would be all Quinnipiac would need for the win, but Dan Travis gave the Bobcats a 2-0 lead 3:42 into the third period, converting on a three-on-two with Isak Tranvik and Chris Myers. Brown pulled Rosen with 1:47 remaining for the extra attacker and Brandon Wong scored an empty net goal with 28 seconds remaining for the 3-0 final.
Rosen finished with 32 saves, including all 15 he faced during the second period, posting his 11th game this season with at least 30 saves. Bud Fisher picked up the shutout for the Bobcats, stopping all 25 of Brown's shots. The Bears return home next weekend to host Clarkson, currently in first place in ECAC Hockey and St. Lawrence.
