#16 St. Lawrence Erases 1-0 Deficit in 2-1 Overtime Victory over the Bears
Feb. 10, 2007
CANTON, NY - Freshman Sean McMonagle (Oakville, ONT) scored his first career goal to give the Bears a 1-0 lead midway through the first period, but #16 St. Lawrence (17-11-2, 13-4-1) tied the game with 2:42 remaining and then won it 1:58 into overtime to hand the Brown men's ice hockey team (9-11-5, 5-10-3) a 2-1 overtime loss in an ECACHL game on Saturday evening at Appleton Arena.
St. Lawrence came out flying and dominated the first part of the opening period, but after the first 20 minutes of play, it was Brown that had a 1-0 lead and the shots were equal at 10 each.
A penalty to the Saints' Alex Curran was what shifted momentum 5:36 into the period, and though Brown didn't score on that power-play, the Bears notched the only goal of the period at 8:55. Junior Brian McNary (Edmonton, ALB) intercepted a St. Lawrence pass in Brown's defensive zone and broke in on a two-on-one with McMonagle. McNary threaded a pass through two Satins' defenseman and McMonagle lifted the puck top-shelf for his first career goal and third point in as many games.
The Saints outshot Brown 15-6 during a scoreless second period as the score remaining 1-0 in favor of the Bears through 40 minutes.
The Bears were less than five minutes away form leaving Appleton with a win, but after several defensive zone face-offs, St. Lawrence finally solved freshman Dan Rosen (Syosset, NY) at 17:18 when Kevin DeVergilio collected the puck in the slot and beat Rosen, who had made 40 straight saves in the game, with a low shot stick-side, ending his shutout bid.
McNary and junior Jeff Prough (Farmington Hills, MI) had a last-second rush, but Alex Petizian saved Prough's shot as time expired, setting up Brown's ninth overtime game of the season.
McMonagle nearly scored the winner with 3:11 remaining in the overtime, but his shot clanged off the far post. The Saints picked up the rebound, went the other way and Drew Bagnall netted the game-winner nine seconds later.
Rosen finished with 46 saves, one-shy of his career-high, while Petizian recorded 23 saves for St. Lawrence. The Bears return to action next weekend when they host Dartmouth and Harvard in a pair of Ivy and ECACHL contests. They are the final regular season home games for Brown as it closes out the year with a road trip to Union and RPI.
