Danis and Mudryk Lead Men's Icers To a 3-2 Win Over Vermont
Feb. 9, 2002
PROVIDENCE, RI - Sophomore Yann Danis (Lafontaine, QUE) stopped 32 shots, while classmate Shane Mudryk (Leduc, ALB) scored a goal and added two assists, in leading Brown (10-11-2) to a 3-2 win over Vermont on Saturday evening at Brown's Meehan Auditorium.
Brown wasted little time in getting on the board as sophomore Brent Robinson (Pointe Claire, QUE), who had a goal and an assist in last night's win over Dartmouth, gave Brown a 1-0 lead at 1:16 of the first. Mudryk earned his first point of the night on that goal.
Vermont knotted the contest at 1-1 at 12:51 of the second, just nine seconds after Brown had successfully killed off a Vermont power play. A shot taken by Scott Mifsud hit the post and the rebound landed on John Longo's stick. Longo fired the puck into the net, sending the teams into the break, tied at 1-1.
Mudryk connected with Freshman Les Haggett (Norwood, NY), who scored his sixth goal of the season, at 10:39 of the third period, giving Brown a 2-1 lead with less than 10 minutes to go. Mudryk scored what proved to be the game-winning goal just seven minutes later, increasing Brown's lead to 3-1. Sophomore Adam Saunders (Moose Jaw, SASK) tallied the assist on that goal.
The Catamounts pulled their goalie with just over a minute left to play and Andrew Sharp scored a goal with an extra skater on the ice to bring Vermont to within 3-2 at 19:13, but Danis shut the Vermont offense down for the final 47 seconds. With 63 saves in two games, Danis earned his second straight win, marking the first time since the 1997-1998 season that the Bears came away with an ECAC weekend sweep.
Currently in a tie for 8th place in the ECAC, Brown will travel to St. Lawrence, also in 8th place, to face the Saints in a 7:00 p.m. contest.
