PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown men's ice hockey team (12-6-3, 7-5-2) scored one goal in each period en route to a 3-1 victory over visiting Vermont (15-10-3, 9-5-2) in an ECACHL contest Friday evening at Meehan Auditorium. The win was Brown's fifth in its past six games and its seventh straight win over the Catamounts.
The game was fast-paced from the opening whistle and Brown took advantage of its first power-play of the game to earn a 1-0 lead at 11:09 of the first. Senior Les Haggett (Norwood, NY) fired a shot over Joe Fallon's right shoulder off a pass from freshman Paul Baier (North Kingstown, RI).
The Bears increased their lead to 2-0 at 8:28 of the second period on a goal from freshman Jeff Prough (Farmington Hills, MI), who scored his sixth goal of the year. Brown took three penalties in a span of 2:51 to open the second stanza, giving Vermont back-to-back five-on-three power-play chances. One for 51 seconds and the other for 28 seconds.
The Bears killed all of the penalties to remain perfect on the penalty kill, 5-5, for the night. Just 14 seconds after the final Vermont power-play, sophomore Brian Ihnacak (Toronto, ONT) skated in with Prough and junior Joe Bauer (Apple Valley, MN) on a three-on-two break. Ihnacak took a shot from the right boards that Fallon saved, but Prough collected the rebound and knocked in the puck for a 2-0 lead.
Vermont came to within one when Jeff Corey snuck the puck past D'Alba from the edge of the crease at 11:58 of the third.
The Catamounts pulled Fallon with just under 1:00 remaining in the game for the extra attacker and Haggett added an empty net goal with 13 seconds left to play for the 3-1 win.
In net for Brown, freshman Adam D'Alba (Glencoe, IL) recorded 26 saves, while Fallon made 22 saves for the Catamounts. The Bears continue action tomorrow night when they face Dartmouth in a 7:00 p.m. contest at Meehan Auditorium.
