Power-Play Leads Bears to 4-2 Win over Princeton
Jan. 29, 2005
PRINCETON, NJ - For the second night in a row, the Brown power-play was effective, scoring three of the Bears' four goals, while leading the men's ice hockey team (11-6-3, 6-5-2) to a 4-2 victory over Princeton (6-14-1, 4-10-0) in an ECACHL and Ivy League contest on Saturday evening at Baker Rink.
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead less than five minutes into the game when Grant Goeckner-Zoeller tallied on the power-play at 4:24 of the first period. However, sophomore Antonin Roux (Danville, QUE) tied the game at 1-1 at 15:45 of the period, cashing in on a Brown man-advantage. Freshman Brian McNary (Edmonton, ALB) and sophomore Sean Dersch (Edmonton, ALB) each assisted on the goal.
Less than two minutes later, at 17:09, senior Mike Meech (Coquitlam, BC), who notched a hat-trick last night at Yale, gave the Bears a 2-1 lead with their second power-play goal of the game. Freshman Jeff Prough (Farmington Hills, MI) and senir Les Haggett (Norwood, NY) notched assists on the goal.
Princeton started the second period, just as it began the first, and scored a goal less than five minutes into the period to knot the game at 2-2. Darroll Powe fired a shot from the right face-off circle that beat freshman Adam D'Alba (Glencoe, IL) over his left shoulder.
The Bears regained the one-goal lead midway through the second period, when Prough knocked the puck in with a low-angle shot, with Brown on the power-play. Freshman Sean Hurley (Rutland, VT) made a nice play at the blueline to beat his defender and then dished the puck to Prough, who was at the left of the net.
With under 10 minutes to go in the game, Roux notched his second of the game on a breakaway with 7:24 left to play. In the midst of a line change, Roux snuck into the Princeton zone and behind the Tiger defense. Hurley made a heads-up play in the Brown zone and sent a long pass up the center of the ice to Roux, who beat Princeton's Eric Leroux top-shelf.
D'Alba finished with x saves for the Bears, who continue action next weekend when they host Dartmouth and Vermont in a pair of ECACHL contests at Meehan Auditorium.
