NEW HAVEN, CT - Senior Mike Meech (Coquitlam, BC) notched his first career hat-trick to lead the Brown Men's Ice Hockey team (10-6-3, 5-5-2) to a 5-3 victory over Yale (3-16-1, 2-11-0) in the Bears first ECACHL action since January 8th on Friday evening at Ingalls Rink.
The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead just 3:24 into the game when Christian Jensen netted an unassisted tally with both teams skating four players. With 10:29 remaining in the first period, Yale had a 5x3 advantage for 42 seconds, which they failed to capitalize on.
The Bears killed the remainder of the power-play and with 8:08 left in the period, Brown got a power-play of its own. After Yale attempted to clear the puck, freshman Jeff Prough (Farmington Hills, MI) swatted the puck out of the air and played it himself along the right boards to avoid a hand-pass call. After collecting the puck Prough found Meech, who skate in and roofed the puck over the glove-side shoulder of Matt Modelski at 12:48 of the period, tying the game at 1-1.
Less than mid-way through the second period, the Bulldogs had another 5x3 opportunity, this time for 44 seconds, which Brown also successfully killed. However, with just one second left on the power-play, Yale took a 2-1 lead at 8:08 on a Jean-Francois Boucher goal.
Brown had a 5x3 of its own, for 1:09, with 9:44 left in the second period, and just 11 seconds into the two-man advantage freshman David Robertson (Saunderstown, RI) tied the game at two all at 10:28 of the second. Senior Les Haggett (Norwood, NY) and freshman Sean Hurley (Rutland, VT) each assisted on the goal.
Just one minute later, at 11:31, freshman Brian McNary (Edmonton, ALB) scored his second goal in as many games with 45 seconds left on a power-play. Junior Adam Tichauer (Toronto, ONT) each an assist on the goal. However, Yale knotted the game at 3-3 with its second power-play goal of the night at 5:19 of the third. Less than two minutes later, the Bears earned another 5x3 opportunity, for 1:00, with 13:16 left in the contest.
With 19 seconds left in the 5x3, Meech added his second goal of the game, at 7:25, knocking in the rebound of a shot from Hurley. Freshman Paul Baier (North Kingstown, RI) also earned an assist on the goal, as the Bears re-gained the lead, 4-3.
The Bears were then whistled for a penalty with nine seconds left on the same power-play, as Yale went on the man advantage for the eighth time of the night.
Yale pulled Modelski with 1:14 remaining in the game and Meech tallied an empty-net goal with 7.3 seconds left, to earn the hat-trick, and seal the 5-3 win for Brown. His hat-trick was the first for Brown since January 10, 2003, when Adam Saunders '04 scored three goals against Princeton.
Freshman Adam D'Alba (Glencoe, IL) finished with 32 saves for the Bears, who continue action tomorrow evening when they travel to New Jersey to take on Princeton in ECACHL and Ivy League action.
