Providence Snaps Brown's Three-Game Winning Streak; Wins 16th Annual Mayor's In Overtime

Jan. 22, 2002

PROVIDENCE, RI - The Providence College Friars (10-12-3) scored three unanswered goals to defeat Brown (7-9-2) in the 16th annual Mayor's Cup Game on Tuesday evening at PC's Schneider Arena. With the win, Providence snapped Brown's three-game winning streak and earned the Mayor's Cup trophy for the first time in three years.

Looking to extend their winning streak to a season-high four games, the Bears got on the board less than two minutes into the contest. Sophomore Pascal Denis (Magog, QUE) first a wrist shot into the upper left corner of the net from the left face-off circle, giving Brown as early 1-0 lead at 1:46 of the first.

The Bears grabbed a 2-0 lead before the end of the period when junior Tye Korbl (Goffstown, NH) stole the puck from PC, deep in the Friar's zone, and skate in all alone, beating the goalie five-hole at 14:45 of the first.

However, in the second period it was all Providence as the Friars scored two goals of their own to knot the game at 2-2 heading into the third. First, PC got on the board with a power play goal at 3:34, added the tying goal with just one minute left before intermission.

The Friars took their first lead of the night at 14:09 of the final stanza. The goal was scored just five seconds after Brown has successfully killed off a penalty, but none-the-less gave Providence the momentum for the last six minutes of the game.

However, less than two minutes later, sophomore Adam Saunders (Moose Jaw, SASK) scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season to knot the contest with 4:16 remaining, sending the game into overtime.

In what was an emotional game for both teams, PC senior Drew Omicioli, a Rhode Island native, scored the game-winner at 1:18 of the overtime period, giving Providence the Mayor's Cup trophy for the first time since his freshman year.

Sophomore Yann Danis (Lafontaine, QUE) made 24 saves in net for the Bears. Brown has the upcoming weekend off and will return to action on Tuesday, January 29, when they face UMass-Lowell, currently #7 in the country, in a 7:00 p.m. contest in Lowell.
