Bears Play Seventh Overtime Game of the Season, Tie Union, 2-2
Jan. 21, 2006
PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown men's ice hockey team (3-11-5, 2-7-3) played its seventh overtime game of the season and its fifth overtime contest in the past seven games in a 2-2 tie with visiting Union (11-10-5, 4-5-3) in an ECAC Hockey League game Saturday evening at Meehan Auditorium.
Brown took a 1-0 lead at 16:58 of the first period with the Bears' skating on their third power-play opportunity of the game. From the left point, sophomore Paul Baier (North Kingstown, RI) sent a cross ice pass to classmate Sean Hurley (Rutland, VT) at the opposite point. Hurley fired a slap-shot past Union's Kris Mayotte, scoring his team-leading fifth power-play goal of the year, and giving Brown a 1-0 lead.
The Bears nearly went up 2-0 before the end of the period when senior Cory Caouette (Devon, ALB) had Mayotte beat on a one-on-one, but the Union net-minder made a spectacular glove-save to hold the score at 1-0.
Union erased Brown's lead just after the mid-way point of the second period, scoring back-to-back goals at 3:26 and 10:42, including one on the power-play, during which sophomore Adam D'Alba (Glencoe, IL) stopped a flurry of shots, before Chris Potts got his stick on the puck and knocked in the rebound.
Sophomore leading scorer Jeff Prough (Farmington Hills, MI) scored his eighth of the year just 3:06 later to knot the game at 2-2. Sophomore Chris Poli (Medfield, MA) collected the puck from freshman Matt Vokes (Auburn, MA) and hit Prough on the move in the slot. Prough one-timed the puck past Mayotte, shooting it so hard that the puck bounced off the inside of the net and hit Mayotte in his back.
Prough's goal would tie the contest at 2-2, and stand up as the game-tying goal, sending Brown to its seventh overtime game of the season, as neither team could net the go-ahead goal during the third period or in the 5:00 overtime session.
In net for Brown, D'Alba recorded 40 saves, including 18 in the second period, while Mayotte stopped 32 shots in net for Union. Brown continues action tomorrow evening when it travels to Cornell next Friday at 7:00 p.m.
