Bears Win Fourth Straight, 4-0, Over Iona as Rowan Earns a Shutout
Jan. 21, 2003
PROVIDENCE, RI - Sophomore goalie Scott Rowan (Vernon, BC), who made his collegiate debut, while posting a shutout, helped to lead Brown (9-6-2) to a 4-0 win over Iona (4-16-1) in a men's ice hockey contest Tuesay evening at Meehan Auditorium.
Brown continued its strong showing on the power-play from Saturday's victory over Holy Cross, in which the Bears went 4-6 on the power-play, as Bruno notched two extra-man goals in the game's opening period, finishing 3-5 on the power-play. Junior Scott Ford (Fort St. John, BC) struck first at 10:39 on a slap shot taken from the center of the blueline. The goal was assisted by senior Paul Esdale (Edmonton, ALB) and junior Brent Robinson (Pointe Claire, QUE), as Esdale notched a point for the seventh game in a row, Robinson for the fifth game in a row, and Ford for the third straight game.
On their very next power-play opportunity of the game, sophomore Les Haggett (Norwood, NY), who has tallied at least one point in each of the past four games, scored at 16:22, as he one-timed the puck past Iona's keeper off a feed from Robinson. Esdale also earned an assist on the goal.
The Bears came out strong in the second and took a 3-0 lead with an even strength goal from Robinson just 1:07 into the second period. In a well-executed rush down the ice, Haggett found senior Keith Kirley (Leverett, MA) to the right of the net. Kirley sent the puck across the crease to Robinson, who was on the doorstep, and the junior went top-shelf for his seventh goal of the season.
Exactly 12 minutes later, at 13:07, Haggett tallied his second power-play goal of the game, and the final goal of the night, with assists going to Ford and Esdale, as Brown headed into the final period, having scored on its first three extra-man opportunities.
For the game, Rowan stopped 19 shots, while picking up his first win and shutting out the opposition as Brown posted its fourth shutout of the season. Brown continues action on Saturday, January 25, in a 7:00 p.m. non-league contest at Merrimack, its first road game since playing at North Dakota on December 28th.
