PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown men's ice hockey team (10-5-4) picked up its first non-conference win of the season, skating past Merrimack (8-14-3), 6-2, on Tuesday evening at Meehan Auditorium, while avenging last year's 3-1 loss to the Warriors. With the six goals, Brown doubled its goal output from the previous three games.
The first 10 minutes of the game were the difference in the game, as Brown got on the board less than two minutes into the game, and scored three more goals during the next 7:35 to take a 4-0 lead less than 10 minutes in.
Senior Pascal Denis (Magog, QUE) got the Bears on the board at 1:59 with his first goal of the season, scoring on a delayed penalty call on Merrimack. Sophomore Cory Caouette (Spruce Grove, ALB) and junior Paul Crosty (Edmonton, ALB) each assisted on the goal.
Just 2:18 later, freshman leading scorer Brian Ihnacak (Toronto, ONT) notched his 10th goal of the year off a feed from senior Nick Ringstad (Fairbanks, AK) and 1:55 after that, senior Brent Robinson (Point Claire, QUE) increased the Bears' lead to 3-0 with a power-play goal at 6:12. Ihnacak and junior Les Haggett (Norwood, NY) each assisted on the goal, which would prove to be the game-winner.
At 9:34, Crosty notched his first career goal on a nifty back-hander, to give the Bears a 4-0 lead, with sophomore Joe Bauer (Apple Valley, MN) and senior Shane Mudryk (Leduc, ALB) each picking up assists.
However, Merrimack got on the board at 13:57, ending the first period scoring, as Brown headed into the first intermission holding onto a 4-1 lead.
After a scoreless second period, Haggett gave the Bears a 5-1 lead with a power-play goal. Robinson sent the puck across the crease and senior Vince Macri (Durham, NH) tipped the puck over to Haggett, who was waiting on the doorstep to knock the puck in for his fourth goal of the year at 5:45 of the third.
Merrimack added its second goal at 16:30 of the third, and junior Chris Swon (Mendham, NJ) finished off the scoring at 19:38 with his sixth goal of the year after a three-on-two rush with linemates Denis and freshman Sean Dersch (Edmonton, ALB), who were each credited with assists.
Senior Hobey Baker Candidate Yann Danis (Saint Jerome, QUE) finished with 25 saves, including 10 in the third period. Brown continues action on Saturday, January, 24, when it rounds out the 2003-2004 non-league schedule with a road game at UMass-Lowell at 7:00 p.m.
