PROVIDENCE, RI - The ECAC leading Brown men's ice hockey team (9-4-3, 9-3-1) rebounded from last night's 3-1 loss to Colgate with a 2-1 overtime victory over #9 Cornell (7-3-5, 5-1-2), while handing the Big Red its first league loss of the season.
In what was a very close game from the opening face-off, Cornell took a 1-0 lead at 15:10 of the first period on a goal by Greg Hornby.
However, just 1:11 later, freshman leading scorer Brian Ihnacak (Toronto, ONT) knocked in the rebound of a Les Haggett (Norwood, NY) shot to knot the game at 1-1, at 16:21. Senior Brent Robinson (Pointe Claire, QUE) also earned an assist on the power-play goal.
The two teams then played two scoreless periods of hockey, which saw the Bears kill three Cornell power-play chances, including one in the final two minutes of play.
Then, just 44 seconds into the extra frame, junior Mike Meech (Coquitlam, BC) took a cross-checking penalty, which the Bears also successfully killed. Just 46 seconds after coming out of the penalty box, Meech became the hero, scoring the winning goal with 1:30 remaining in overtime, off a goal-mouth feed from Haggett. Robinson also assisted on the winning goal.
Senior Hobey Baker Candidate Yann Danis (Saint Jerome, QUE) finished with 31 saves, including all 22 in the final 43:30 of action. Brown will take a two week break from ECAC action due to travel-partner Harvard's exam schedule, and will host Connecticut in a 7:00 p.m. contest on Friday, January 16th. The game will be televised live on Cox3.
