MINNEAPOLIS, MN - Senior Mike Stuart (Rome, NY) scored a power-play goal with 8:52 left in the game and freshman Mike Clemente (Great Falls, VA) stopped a career-high 43 saves to help lead the Brown men's ice hockey team (1-8-3) to a 1-1 tie with Western Michigan (3-12-5) in the third-place game of the 2009 Dodge Holiday Classic, Saturday afternoon at Mariucci Arena. This marked the second-ever meeting between the two teams, both of which have come in third-place games of holiday tournaments.
The Bears played one of their best periods of hockey during the opening 20 minutes, outshooting the Broncos, 13-8, and dictating the pace of play for the majority of the frame. Brown also had the only power-play chance of the period, but failed to capitalize, taking just one shot on net during the man-advantage.
Brown started the second period on a strong note, earning back-to-back power-play opportunities in the first three minutes, which included a 57-second five-on-three chance. However, the Bears failed to capitalize and momentum swung towards the Broncos' favor, who ended up with a 17-11 advantage in shots on goal for the period.
Western Michigan nearly took a 1-0 lead with 6:40 left in the period when the puck trickled into the goal, but the ref had blown the play dead a split second before it crossed the line and video review confirmed the no-goal.
However, the Broncos gained the 1-0 lead before the end of the period, scoring with 1:15 remaining on their second power-play of the game. After the Bears cleared the zone on the penalty-kill, the Broncos came back into the zone and drew another penalty. Western Michigan goalie Jerry Kuhn vacated the net on the delayed penalty and just as he reached the bench, Greg Squires fired a shot from inside the left point that beat Clemente glove-side.
The Broncos then went up on their third power-play chance of the game and 65 seconds later, Brown took another penalty, setting up a 55-second five-on-three chance for the Broncos with 41 seconds left in the period. They nearly made it 2-0 with just five seconds remaining, but sophomore Jeremy Russell (St. Albert, ALB) blocked a shot and immediately iced the puck to end both the immediate threat and the period.
Western Michigan opened the third period with 14 seconds remaining on the two-man advantage, which would be followed by another 1:05 power-play, but Brown was able to kill the advantage to hold the deficit to just the one goal, setting up Stuart's game-tying tally.
Stuart tied the game at 11:02, scoring on a strong slap shot from the left point, 50 seconds into the Bears fourth power-play chance of the night. Senior Eric Slais (Fenton, MO) passed the puck up to junior Sean McMonagle (Oakville, ONT) at the right point, who immediately dished it over to Stuart on his left. Stuart fired a one-timer that beat Kuhn to the far corner, deflecting off the far post and into the back of the net.
Following the goal, the next four-and-a-half minutes were mired by penalties, including three by the Bears in a span of two minutes, which gave the Broncos two separate five-on-three chances totaling 43 seconds and two separate four-on-three chances totaling 1:45.
However, Brown's penalty-killing was up to the task and Clemente made a huge glove-save on Tyler Ludwig with 4:06 remaining, helping to force overtime, the Bears' third overtime contest of the season.
Both teams had chances to win it in overtime, but both Kuhn and Clemente stopped the shots that reached them, as the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
Brown finished the game with 33 shots for a new season-high, while the one goal against marked a new season-low for the Bears.
After a three-game break from ECAC Hockey play, the Bears continue action on Friday, January 9th when they travel to Harvard for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
