Brown Men's Ice Hockey Skates Past Union, 4-1

Jan. 3, 2004

SCHENECTADY, NY - The ECAC leading Brown men's ice hockey team (8-3-3, 8-2-1) scored three unanswered goals en route to a 4-1 victory over Union (7-9-3, 2-5-1) at Union's Achilles Rink. Senior Brent Robinson (Pointe Claire, QUE) led the way for the Bears with four points, playing a part in all four goals, while senior Hobey Baker Candidate Yann Danis (Saint Jerome, QUE) stopped 30 of 31 shots for the win.

Unlike last night's game against RPI where the contest remained scoreless through more than two periods of hockey, the Bears wasted little time in getting on the board against the Skating Dutchmen, taking a 1-0 lead at 7:14 of the first period.

Skating on their first power-play of the night, freshman leading scorer Brian Ihnacak (Toronto, ONT) tipped in the rebound of a Robinson shot from the right point for the early lead. Senior Vince Macri (Durham, NH) also earned an assist on the goal.

With 2:40 remaining in the first period, Union took its second penalty in a span of 1:08, giving Brown a 5x3 power-play opportunity for 52 seconds. The Bears grabbed a 2-0 lead just 18 seconds into the 5x3 on a Robinson shot from the top of the right face-off circle that beat Union's Kris Mayotte stick-side. Ihnacak send the puck from the left corner up to senior Scott Ford (Fort St. John, BC), who was on the left point. Ford crossed the puck over to Robinson and the senior Assistant Captain picked up his second point of the game.

Brown further increased its lead in the second period when junior Mike Meech (Coquitlam, BC) beat and out-stretched Mayotte high and on his glove-side with a wrap-around goal at 5:06 of the second. Robinson and junior Les Haggett (Norwood, NY) each assisted on the goal.

However, at 7:20 of the second, the Bears took their third penalty of the game and with Union deep in Brown's zone, the Bears could not get a line change after the Union power-play had expired and the Dutchmen fired a rapid succession of shots at Danis, eventually beating him, glove-side.

With time ticking down in the second period, the Bears added one more goal with 23 seconds remaining in the period to take a 4-1 lead heading into the second intermission. Robinson made a great play along the boards and came up with the puck. He hit sophomore Cory Caouette (Spruce Grove, ALB) in the slot, and Caouette shot the puck off the left post and into the back of the net for his third goal of the season. Haggett also earned an assist on the goal.

Brown's defense shut down Union for the final 20 minutes, as the Bears picked up their second straight win.

Danis stopped 30 shots for the Bears, including 14 in the second period and all 12 in the third period. After six road games, Brown, which remains in first place in the ECAC, will return to Meehan Auditorium next weekend to host ECAC opponents Colgate and Cornell on Friday and Saturday, January 9th and 10th. Both games begin at 7:00 in Meehan, where Brown has a 21-2-5 record in its last 28 games.
