Princeton Tops Men’s Hockey, 7-1, to Claim Series

PRINCETON, N.J. – Sophomore defenseman Zach Giuttari (Warwick, R.I.) scored in the third period, but seventh-seeded Princeton used a four-goal second period to power past the Brown men's hockey team, 7-1, in game two of the ECAC First Round series Saturday at Hobey Baker Rink.

Princeton (15-12-4) also captured the first game of the series on Friday to advance to the ECAC Quarterfinals. The No. 10 seed Bears wrapped up their season at 8-19-4 overall.

Rookie Luke Kania (Chicago, Ill.) made 37 saves for the Bears. Ryan Ferland led the Tigers with 27 stops. Ryan Kuffner and Max Veronneau paced Princeton with three points apiece.

After Brown managed to kill two penalties in the opening five minutes of the contest, the Tigers scored the lone goal of the frame with one minute remaining, as Jackson Cressey gave the home side a one-goal lead at the first intermission. Kania made 14 saves in the first period.

The Tigers carried over their momentum into the second period with two goals in the first 5:03 of play, starting at 3:37, when Ryan Kuffner scored on a partial breakaway following a turnover at the blue line. Derek Topatigh added a power-play goal less than two minutes later for the three-goal lead.

Luke Keenan and Alex richer both scored in the final five minutes of the period for the five-goal lead at the second intermission.

Giuttari put the Bears on the board at 8:13 of the third period, scoring on the power play for his fifth tally of the season. Max Gottlieb (Old Bridge, N.J.) and Sam Lafferty (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) picked up assists on the play.

Veronneau and Matt Nelson added two more goals in the third period to secure the win. Princeton outshot Brown, 44-30.
