PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Rookie Luke Kania (Chicago, Ill.) stopped all 29 shots he faced and three different players scored as the Brown men's hockey team blanked Dartmouth, 3-0, in Saturday's ECAC contest on senior night at Meehan Auditorium.
Brown (8-17-4, 7-14-1) earned its first shutout over Dartmouth since Feb. 15, 1995, and with the victory over Harvard last night, earned a weekend sweep over the Crimson and Big Green for the first time since 2013-14. Dartmouth dropped to 13-14-2, 11-10-1.
Brown, the No. 10 seed, will travel to seventh-seeded Princeton in the best-of-three first round of the ECAC Tournament next weekend, starting on Friday, March 2 at 7 PM.
Kania earned his first career shutout in net, while Tommy Marchin (Algonac, Mich.), Charlie Corcoran (New Canaan, Conn.) and Max Gottlieb (Old Bridge, N.J.) took care of the goals for the Bears. Defenseman Zach Giuttari (Warwick, R.I.) had three assists. Adrian Clark made 24 saves for the Big Green.
The two teams were closely contested in a scoreless opening period, as Dartmouth held a slim edge in shots, 9-8.
Marchin opened the scoring at 16:27 in the second period with his team high 11th goal of the season. Marchin and Nolan Aibel (Brookville, N.Y.) had numbers crossing into the offensive end, but after an attempted pass was blocked, Marchin finished the play with a shot past Clark.
Corcoran added a second goal with just 1:20 left in the period, as he tapped home a rebound in front of the net for his fourth goal of the season.
The Bears took advantage of a pair of Dartmouth penalties late in the contest, as Gottlieb set up quickly on the power play, and blasted a shot from the blue line past Clark with 40 seconds remaining to seal the win.
Brown will head to Princeton next weekend when they play the Tigers in a best-of-three series in the first round of the ECAC playoffs.
