Marchin’s Hat Trick, Lappin’s OT Winner Sends Men’s Hockey Past RPI, 5-4

TROY, N.Y. – Tommy Marchin (Algonac, Mich.) posted a hat trick and Tim Lappin (St. Charles, Ill.) notched the game winner in overtime as the Brown men's hockey team scored four unanswered goals to rally past Rensselaer, 5-4, in Saturday's ECAC contest at Houston Field House.

Brown (5-6-0, 4-6-0 ECAC) faced a three-goal deficit midway through the third period, but the Bears rattled off three goals within a 5:26 span to force overtime, before Lappin scored at 1:35 of OT to complete the comeback. RPI drops to 3-10-3 overall and 2-5-1 in the conference.

Marchin recorded his second career hat trick and added one assist for a career-high four points. Chris Berger (Buffalo, N.Y.) scored his first career goal on the game-tying tally and added two assists for the three-point night. Max Gottlieb (Old Bridge, N.J.) had two assists.

Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, Calif.) made 27 saves in the win. Linden Marshall had 25 stops on the other end for the Engineers.

Marchin gave Brown the early lead as he scored just 20 seconds into the contest on the first shot of the game. Marchin collected the puck from Berger in the neutral zone and ripped a shot from the left circle for his second goal in as many nights.

RPI responded with three goals in the middle frame, starting with a power-play goal by Jacob Hayhurst midway through the period to even the score. Charlie Manley notched the go-ahead goal at 14:03 with a shot from in front of the blue line before Billy Jerry scored with 1:11 remaining for the 3-1 advantage.

Brown opened the third period on the power play, but the Engineers scored a short-handed goal just ten seconds into the frame to move in front, 4-1.

Marchin started the comeback with his second of the game at 11:07 and then added a power-play goal at 15:27 to complete the hat trick. Berger followed up with the game-tying goal at 16:33 as he tapped in the rebound to even the score.

Lappin finished the comeback at 1:35 in overtime with his second of the season as he snapped a shot from the right circle that rattled off the crossbar and into the net.

Rensselaer edged Brown in shots, 31-30.

Brown will host Bentley on Wednesday, December 6 at 7 PM.
