PRINCETON, N.J. – Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, Calif.) stopped all 47 shots he faced and Tommy Marchin (Algonac, Mich.) had two goals as the Brown men's hockey team blanked Princeton, 3-0, in Saturday's ECAC contest at Hobey Baker Rink.
Brown split the weekend to improve to 3-5-0 overall and 3-5-0 in the ECAC. Princeton dropped to 3-3-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the conference.
Nieto set a career high with 47 saves, including 21 stops in the third period, reaching the 40-save mark for the second time this season. Ryan Ferland had 31 stops on the other end.
In addition to Marchin, sophomore Brent Beaudoin (Londonderry, N.H.) also had a goal for the Bears. Brown went 7-for-7 on the penalty kill.
Princeton edged Brown in shots, 13-12, during a scoreless first period. The two teams combined for five power plays during the stanza, but neither team was able to find the back of the net.
Marchin put the Bears on the board just 1:52 into the second period. Rookie Chris Berger (Buffalo, N.Y.) gained possession along the boards and slid the puck out to the right circle, where Marchin blasted a shot past Ferland for his first tally of the season.
Nieto made 13 stops in the middle period, including back-to-backs saves to deny Eric Robinson on a partial breakaway, to maintain the one-goal advantage.
Beaudoin added an insurance goal for the Bears at 12:18 of the third period. After Sam Lafferty (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) won a faceoff in the offensive zone, Beaudoin quickly snapped a shot through the legs of Ferland for his third of the season.
Brown tacked on another goal at 15:42 as Marchin used a nice move in front for his second of the game. Nolan Aibel (Brookville, N.Y.) kept the puck in the zone and fed Marchin to pick up the assist.
Princeton outshot Brown, 47-34.
