PHILADELPHIA – Senior Dennis Robertson (Fort St. John, British Columbia), who recently completed a four-year career with the Brown men's hockey team, has been selected as a Senior CLASS Award Second Team All-American, announced Thursday afternoon at the Frozen Four in Philadelphia.
The award, chosen by a nationwide vote of Division I men's hockey coaches, national hockey media and fans, is given annually to the most outstanding senior student-athlete in Division I men's hockey. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – classroom, community, character and competition.
Robertson, who was tabbed the ECAC Hockey Co-Best Defensive Defenseman of the Year, is Brown's second Senior CLASS Award All-American selection in the last three years after Jack Maclellan was named to the Second Team in 2012.
Robertson, a Third Team All-ECAC selection, recently signed a professional contract with the Carolina Hurricanes and finished his Brown career with 17 goals and 53 assists for 70 points in 128 games played. He ranks in the top-10 in program history for both points and assists by a defenseman.
A two-time team captain and natural leader, Robertson is a concentrator in Business, Entrepreneurship and Organizations and has been an active member of the Brown and Providence community, serving on several outreach programs. During the summer after his freshman year, Robertson and five other teammates rescued three teenagers from drowning at South Shore Beach. Robertson, a former lifeguard in his hometown, led the charge to save the trio of teens caught in a deadly riptide. For his efforts, Robertson was awarded the 2012 Silver Medal for Bravery and the M.G. Griffiths Award (awarded to a proficiency award holder who applied skill and knowledge gained through Lifesaving Society programs to aid a victim of an aquatic emergency) from The Lifesaving Society BC and Yukon Branch.
Robertson is coming off another impressive all-around season for the Bears. He started 29 games on left defense and logged substantial minutes as one-half of the team's top defensive pairing, finishing with 17 points on six goals and 11 assists. He scored all six goals during ECAC contests and was named First Team All-Ivy for the second straight season.
A reliable defensive presence throughout his four-year career, Robertson led the team with 55 blocked shots and finished with a +11 rating as a senior. Robertson was a large part of Brown special teams, playing on both the penalty kill and power-play units, and finished tied for the team-high with five power-play goals and a conference-high two game-winning goals.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
