St. Lawrence Edges Men’s Hockey, 3-2, to Claim Series
CANTON, N.Y. – Senior Garnet Hathaway (Kennebunkport, Maine) evened the score early in the third, but the Saints replied with a pair of quick goals and held on the rest of the way as the ninth-seeded Brown men's hockey team fell to eighth-seeded St. Lawrence, 3-2, in game two of the ECAC First Round Saturday evening at Appleton Arena.
St. Lawrence (15-17-4) completed the series sweep after a 3-2 double overtime win on Friday and will advance to the ECAC quarterfinals. Brown wraps up the 2013-14 season at 11-17-3 overall.
Hathaway notched his sixth tally of the season and third point of the series, while junior Ryan Jacobson (Greenwood Village, Colo.) also scored for the Bears midway through the third frame. Rookie Tyler Steel (Kelowna, British Columbia) made 25 saves in net for the Bears, while Matt Weninger recorded 23 stops to earn the win.
The two teams skated to a scoreless first period as the Saints held a slim edge in shots, 10-7.
St. Lawrence jumped on the board at the 5:13 mark in the second period, when Eric Sweetman recorded a power-play goal, scoring from the right circle over the shoulder of Steel to give the Saints the lead, 1-0.
The teams traded chances during the first four-on-four of the period, as Steel came up with a pair of big saves, while Weninger stopped a blast by Brandon Pfeil (West Vancouver, British Columbia) on the other end.
The Saints threatened during the second four-on-four late in the stanza, but senior Jake Goldberg (Langhorne, Pa.) made a sliding block to prevent any damage and preserve the one-goal deficit.
Hathaway put Brown on the board at the 4:10 mark of the third period as he received a pass from Zack Pryzbek (Niagara on the Lake, Ontario), fought for space in front of the crease and kept with the play to beat Weninger and even up the score, 1-1.
Nevertheless, SLU answered back with a pair of goals 26 seconds later as Gavin Bayreuther scored at 4:36 and Woody Hudson followed at 5:52 to lift the Saints in front, 3-1.
Brown continued to battle, however, as Jacobson scored at 10:10 when he fielded a pass from freshman Davey Middleton (Novi, Mich.) and launched a shot from the left side into the back of the net, trimming the deficit to one, 3-2.
The Bears made a strong run down the stretch when Mark Naclerio (Milford, Conn.) won back-to-back faceoffs in the final minute, but subsequent shots by Nick Lappin (Geneva, Il.) and Goldberg were turned away by Weninger, as the Saints held on for the win.
St. Lawrence outshot the Bears by a 28-25 margin in the contest.
