NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Tenth-ranked Yale notched three of the team's four power-play goals in the opening 5:03 of the contest as the Brown men's hockey team fell to the Bulldogs, 6-0, Saturday evening at Ingalls Rink. The two teams split the weekend series after Brown recorded a 3-1 victory at home on Friday.
Brown dropped to 8-8-3 on the season and 5-6-1 in ECAC play, while Yale improved to 10-5-4 overall and 5-4-3 in league action.
Alex Lyon registered 28 saves to earn the shutout win, while freshman Tyler Steel (Kelowna, British Columbia) took the loss for the Bears before giving way to senior Marco De Filippo (Auronzo Di Cadore, Italy), who made 34 saves.
Tommy Fallen and Kenny Agostino notched two goals apiece for the Bulldogs, while senior Garnet Hathaway (Kennebunkport, Maine) led the Bears with five shots.
Yale benefited from a series of Brown penalties in the opening four minutes and went on to take advantage of three 5-on-3 opportunities during the stanza to build a four-goal lead at the first intermission.
The Bulldogs jumped on the board with a power-play goal by Fallen at 3:10, the first of a pair of two-man advantage tallies, as he snuck a shot under the pad of Steel for the early lead, 1-0.
After Yale added a power-play goal by Rob O'Gara 36 seconds later, Fallen notched another 5-on-3 tally at 5:03, giving the home side the three-goal lead.
Brown managed to kill off the third two-man power play later in the period, but Yale continued to press following the advantage, as Agostino scored an unassisted tally at 13:46 to give the Bulldogs the 4-0 lead at the first intermission.
The Bears returned to form in the second period by outshooting the Bulldogs by a 12-6 margin in the stanza. Brown put together a flurry of shots down the stretch, highlighted by a power-play opportunity in the final three minutes. Nick Lappin (Geneva, Ill.), Matt Lorito (Oakville, Ontario) and Mark Naclerio (Milford, Conn.) each had quality bids, but Lyon stopped all three shots to preserve the four-goal advantage.
Yale tacked on the fifth goal of the contest early in the third period, when Gus Young scored just 26 seconds into the stanza on a blast from in front of the blue line. Following a Brown penalty, Agostino posted the sixth and final goal of the contest at 17:51 to seal the victory.
