Men's Hockey Opens Best-of-Three First Round Series Friday vs. Clarkson

This Weekend: Brown hosts Clarkson in a best-of-three First Round series, as the Bears will play a First Round series at home for the first time since 2005. Brown is playing in the First Round for the ninth straight season, as the Bears' last top-four finish and subsequent bye came during the 2003-04 season. In those eight years, Brown advanced to the Quarterfinals three times, winning in 2005, 2009 and 2010.

All-Time in the ECAC First Round: Since the first season that the ECAC hosted a First Round of the playoffs (1989-90), Brown has played in the First Round 15 times. The Bears were 2-1 in single-elimination games between 1989-90 and 1996-97, while opening in the Quarterfinal Round in four of the five other seasons. The ECAC began a best-of-three format for the First Round beginning with the 1997-98 season. The Bears are 12-17-0 all-time in those games, winning the series four times (in 2003, 2005, 2009, and 2010). From 1961-62 to 1981-82, the ECAC playoffs began with four single-elimination Quarterfinal games. Brown was 4-7-0 in those games. From 1982-83 to 1988-89, the ECAC playoffs began with a best-of-three Quarterfinal series. Brown was 0-2-0 in those games.

Last Time Out: Brown posted a weekend split, falling to Cornell, 4-1, on Friday night, before earning a 5-1 win over Colgate on Saturday, as the Bears secured 7th place in the ECAC standings, their highest finish since 2005. On Friday, against the Big Red, freshman Mark Naclerio scored his fourth goal of the year off assists from junior Mike Juola and junior Dennis Robertson. Senior Anthony Borelli recorded 20 saves. The next night against the Raiders, sophomore Matt Harlow led all scorers with two goals and an assist, while junior Mark Hourihan had a goal and an assist, and senior Chris Zaires, junior Matt Wahl, and freshman Nick Lappin all had a pair of assists. Sophomore Matt Lorito and Juola also scored in the win, while Borelli recorded 33 saves with 11 in each period.

Brown vs. Clarkson: Brown and Clarkson have met 82 times, with the Golden Knights leading the all-time series, 58-16-8. During the regular season in 2012-13, Brown picked up three points against Clarkson, battling to a 3-3 tie in Providence and earning a 3-2 win in Potsdam. Brown won the first-ever meeting, 6-5, in a neutral site game played at St. Lawrence in December of 1952. Clarkson dominated Brown during the early part of the series, winning 13 straight games from 1981-1987 and going 21-0-5 from March of 1992 to November of 2001. Brown has been more successful recently, earning an 8-12-3 record since February of 2002, including sweeping the series in 2004-05 and 2009-10. Senior Richie Crowley is Brown's statistical leader against the Golden Knights with four points, all assists, in seven career games. Freshman Mark Naclerio (3a; 2 games), sophomore Ryan Jacobson (3g; 4 games), junior Matt Wahl (1g, 2a; 6 games), and senior Chris Zaires (1g, 2a; 8 games) all have three points against the Golden Knights.

Scouting Clarkson: The Golden Knights enter the First Round after getting swept last weekend at Rensselaer (5-0) and Union (4-0) in the final two games of the regular season. Prior to the pair of losses, Clarkson had earned a split in four of its previous five ECAC Hockey weekends and three points in the fifth. Following a string of four losses and a 3-3 tie with St. Lawrence to open the 2013 calendar year, Clarkson posted a split with Harvard (W, 5-1) and Dartmouth (L, 5-1), three points with Colgate (T, 4-4) and Cornell (W, 6-3), a split with Union (W, 2-1) and Rensselaer (L, 6-2), a split with Princeton (W, 3-2) and Quinnipiac (L, 2-1), and a split with Dartmouth (W, 4-0) and Harvard (L, 6-2). The Golden Knights are led by junior Allan McPherson, who has 25 points (9g, 16a) in 34 games. Juniors Jarrett Burton (10g, 8a) and Ben Sexton (5g, 13a) both have 18 points in 33 and 26 games, respectively, while freshman Pat Megannety is fourth on the team in scoring with 17 points (7g, 10a) in 34 games. Freshman Greg Lewis has seen the bulk of work in net for Clarkson and has a 2.98 GAA and a .900 save percentage in 32 games (9-16-6).
