PROVIDENCE, RI – Three former Brown hockey standouts were among 19 former Ivy Leaguers and 28 ECAC Hockey alumni to appear on NHL Opening Day rosters. In his 10th professional season and fifth in the NHL, Yann Danis '04, who had been the starter for the AHL's Oklahoma City Barons during the lockout, was called up to the Edmonton Oilers. In his fourth professional season and second in the NHL, Ryan Garbutt '09 is with the Dallas Stars. In his third professional season and second in the NHL, Aaron Volpatti '10 is with the Vancouver Canucks.
Garbutt and Volpatti both played in their respective teams' season openers with Garbutt seeing roughly eight minutes of action and Volpatti earning roughly 13 minutes of time. Danis and the Oilers had the night off but will play at Vancouver Sunday night.
Since graduating from Brown, Danis has spent time in both the AHL and the NHL in addition to a season playing in Russia with the KHL. A 2004 Hobey Baker Award Finalist and Ivy League and ECAC Player of the Year, Danis helped to lead the Hamilton Bulldogs to the 2007 Calder Cup Championship and in 2012 was named the AHL's Best Goaltender and an AHL All-Star.
Garbutt has played in 21 career NHL games (2g, 1a) along with 115 games in the AHL (35g, 35a). Volpatti has played in 39 NHL games (2g, 1a) and 61 AHL games (3g, 10a). He missed the majority of the 2011-12 season with an injury.
